Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: A New Dedication To Public Service And Humanity

On this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, commemorating the life and career of the great civil rights leader, America needs to rededicate itself to public service and humanity.

Such an example is the reaction of the American people and their government to the horrific tragedy in Haiti. We can be proud of the response of Americans to this unbelievable natural disaster, as shown by the outpouring of financial and practical support demonstrated in the past six days.

But also, President Obama and his administration have taken on this disaster with a full, long range commitment to restore a future to that island nation, which has had so much bad fortune in recent years, as well as in its entire history since independence in 1804. The President’s leadership is a true model of what we all have a right to expect from our government, and it sets a good standard for future Presidents as well.

Let the naysayers, such as Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter show their true colors as they character assassinate themselves. We should not spend time worrying about such losers, as there is too much work to do, and fortunately, most of the American people are good, decent people who come to the aid of their fellow human beings in the spirit of the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, who we were blessed to have for too short a time, but who dedicated his life to bettering this nation!

Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson And Their Ilk: Despicable Human Beings! :(

Here we are in the midst of the greatest human crisis caused by nature–the Haitian Earthquake–and the hate mongers, the right wing religious and ideological conservatives–are doing nothing but make the situation worse by their rhetoric.

Pat Robertson’s earlier reported comment about Haiti having made a pact with the devil was already commented upon by the author a few days ago. Rush Limbaugh exploits the situation by claiming it is a way for Barack Obama to consolidate support among darker skinned blacks! Now most recently, Ann Coulter, who loves to issue outrageous statements with a smirk, says that she wonders why Bill Clinton, who she insults with sexual innuendo, has to be involved in Haiti relief. Indeed, it would be better to send Jimmy Carter, since there are next to no Jews in Haiti that he could insult, according to her statement!

So rather than contribute to the Haiti relief, these three despicable human beings instead exploit it, with Limbaugh and Coulter using it as an opportunity to trash Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter, all of whom are involved in active efforts to help the needy and the poor. This is particularly the case for Carter and Clinton in their private lives in the years after the White House. Instead of applauding this, Coulter ridicules it!

There is an old saying, that what goes around comes around, and somehow one has to believe that God will punish these despicable human beings for their outrageous lack of concern for the Haitian victims, and willingness to exploit the issue for their own advantage!

The Irony Of The Upcoming Anniversary Of Barack Obama’s Inauguration

It is extremely ironic that as we arrive on Wednesday at the first anniversary of Barack Obama’s inauguration as President, that we face the strong possibility of the loss of Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat to a Republican tomorrow evening!

Martha Coakley, the Massachusetts Attorney General, well liked in her state and seen as a solid figure in her state government role, faces the strong likelihood that, because of an extremely lackluster campaign by her, and a very vigorous, active campaign by Scott Brown, the state senator who is her Republican opponent, that the GOP will win that race and be able to halt health care reform in its tracks by having 41 Republicans senators, all committed to a filibuster of any legislation on the subject.

It would be a great tragedy if that happened, and it is hoped that enough Democrats and independents will show their commitment to Barack Obama, who still has a 60 percent popular support level in the most recent Massachusetts polls, and vote for Martha Coakley, who is likely to be an outstanding Senator if only she can get past her lackluster campaign, and go to the Senate to continue Ted Kennedy’s work!

This is one case where we must have our fingers crossed and wait with baited breath for the momentous results tomorrow evening!
