Four Challenging Senate Races For 2026 For Democrats

Several states with Republican Senate seats up for 2026 will be a challenge for Democrats, with them needing at least a gain of four seats, assuming the party keeps all of the seats they have coming up for reelection, in order to regain control of the US Senate in 2027.

This includes the states of:

Alaska
Iowa
Kentucky
Maine
Nebraska
North Carolina
Ohio
Texas

Today, there will be examination and analysis of the first four races listed above, with a later article on the latter four states.

In Alaska, native American former Congresswoman Mary Peltola is challenging Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, and this is believed to be a potential gain for Democrats, who see her race as the crucial one on the road to a Democratic majority in the Senate.

In Iowa, Senator Joni Ernst is retiring, and Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson is favored as the Republican nominee, seen as having an edge in a state that has trended Republican in recent times.

However, there are two Democrats who have drawn interest—Zach Wahls, who became noticed 15 years ago when he openly supported his lesbian parents, and would end up in the Iowa state legislature, as a liberal activist; and Josh Turek, born with spina bifida, but while being in a wheelchair for his lifetime, has been a competitor in wheelchair basketball sports, along with service in the Iowa legislature. Wahls is seen as more progressive, while Turek is seen as more moderate in views.

Kentucky, a strongly Republican state, is choosing a successor to long term Senator Mitch McConnell, who had been both Senate Majority Leader and Senate Minority Leader. The Republican favorite is former State Attorney General Daniel Cameron, but challenged by Congressman Andy Barr, one of the most extreme right wing members of the Republican Party in Congress.

Democrats have two former contenders for the Senate—Amy McGrath, former Marine fighter pilot; and Charles Booker, former state legislator. Sadly, it would be a major upset if either Democrat won the Senate seat.

The state of Maine will have the most hotly contested election for the Senate, with Republican incumbent Susan Collins, in her 30th year in the Senate, and having a moderate image, but under attack by both her own party, including Donald Trump, but also Democrats who see a great opportunity to take this seat.

Collins is in her mid 70s, and her two Democratic opponents are sitting Governor Janet Mills, who would be, at 79, the oldest first term US Senator in history, if she won; and Graham Platner, oyster farmer, harbor master, and military veteran, who has become controversial for his past statements, his chest tattoo, and his perceived extreme utterances on a multitude of issues.

Polls indicate a very close competition between Mills and Planter, and between either of them and Collins, and this could be the tipping point election for control of the Senate in 2027.

At this point, the states of Alaska and Maine seem potential gains for the Democrats, with some possibility in Iowa, but unlikely any chance to win in Kentucky!

Democratic US Senate Races In 2026 Seen As “Safe” For Incumbents

With 35 US Senate races up for election in November, 2026, the following Democratic Senators are seen as having “safe” seats:

John Hickenlooper, Colorado
Chris Coons, Delaware
Cory Booker, New Jersey
Ben Ray Lujan, New Mexico
Jeff Merkley, Oregon
Jack Reed, Rhode Island
Mark Warner, Virginia

Also, Ed Markey, Massachusetts, who, however, is being challenged by fellow Democrat, Congressman Seth Moulton, mostly on the issue of age.

The following Senate seats that are Democratic are likely to remain so, but with challenges from Republicans:

(Dick Durbin), Illinois, who is retiring–with Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi far ahead of competitors in fund raising and polling.

(Gary Peters), Michigan, who is retiring–with a hot three way race of Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who has the private support of Democratic Senate leadership; State Senator Mallory McMorrow; and former Wayne County, Michigan Health Director Abdul El-Sayed. Stevens is seen as centrist, while McMorrow and El-Sayed are seen as more progressive by comparison, and all three are 39-42 in age, so a new generation for sure, no matter who wins the nomination. All three are very close in public opinion polls, but Stevens seems to have a clearcut edge at this point.

(Jeanne Shaheen), New Hampshire, who is retiring–with Congressman Chris Pappas the only viable candidate for the Democrats–facing a likely challenge from former Republican Senator John Sununu.

Finally, the one most crucial race is Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who has the toughest race of all, to keep his seat. The youngest member of the Senate, he has been outstanding, but Georgia will be a tough state to win reelection in 2026, as it tends to be Republican oriented, except for the miracle that both Georgia Senators elected in 2021 are Democrats—Ossoff, and Raphael Warnock.

Donald Trump Spiraling Out Of Control In First Two Weeks Of 2026!

Donald Trump is spiraling out of control in the first two weeks of 2026, leading to the thought that the nation cannot take much more of this lunatic behavior.

The invasion and removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro; the shooting and murder of Rene Nicole Good in Minneapolis, and the increased ICE presence in Minnesota; the open threat to invade Greenland and break up the NATO alliance; and the decision to seek criminal prosecution of Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell—all are indications of an unstable, highly dangerous President, who is being supported by a very corrupt, abusive group of Cabinet officers and others, such as Stephen Miller, Kevin Roberts, and Russell Vought, all promoting the very dangerous and divisive Project 2025!

Additionally, Trump has created a fantasy regarding the history of the January 6, 2021 US Capitol Insurrection on the White House website, and has been able to wipe out historically accurate information about his impeachments and the Capitol Insurrection on the Presidential Exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery. Also, he has twisted and distorted information about his predecessors, Joe Biden, and Barack Obama, on the corridor in the White House, where there is a Presidential Exhibit with portraits and text about earlier Presidents.

Incumbent Democratic Gubernatorial Races In 2026 And Potential Of Democratic Gubernatorial Presidential Nominee In 2028!

Many Democratic Governors are seeking reelection, and are in good shape to win in November 2026.

This includes the following Incumbent Governors:

Arizona–Katie Hobbs
Connecticut–Ned Lamont
Hawaii–Josh Green
Illinois–JD Pritzker
Maryland–Wes Moore
Massachusetts–Maura Healey
New York–Kathy Hochul
Oregon–Tina Kotek
Pennsylvania–Josh Shapiro
Rhode Island–Dan McKee

Included in the above list are three Governors who are perceived as likely Presidential contenders for the Democratic Party in 2028—JD Pritzker, Wes Moore, and Josh Shapiro.

Three “retiring” Democratic Governors are also seen as likely to be Presidential contenders:

California—Gavin Newsom
Colorado—Jared Polis
Michigan—Gretchen Whitmer

There certainly is no lack of qualified and competent Governors in the Democratic Party, and the odds that a sitting or former Governor might be the Democratic Presidential nominee in 2028 is quite high!

Three Native American Women Running For Governor In New Mexico, And US Senate In Minnesota And Alaska!

In this election year 2026, America is seeing three native American women Democrats running for higher office, and the likelihood that all three might triumph, and add to the accomplishments of native Americans.

In New Mexico, former Congresswoman Deb Haaland, also the former Secretary of the Interior under President Joe Biden, is campaigning for Governor.

In Minnesota, two term Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan is campaigning for the US Senate seat of retiring Senator Tina Smith.

And in Alaska, former Congresswoman Mary Peltola is also campaigning for the US Senate seat now held by Republican Dan Sullivan. She was able to defeat former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin twice in Congressional races.

Haaland is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, and Flanagan is a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe (also known as the White Earth Nation), while Peltola is from the Yup’ik (Alaska Native) tribe.

If these three Native American women win, they will be the first of their gender to have accomplished such high office!

Four Midwest Governorship Elections 2026: Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio

There will be four Midwest Governorships up for election this fall of 2026.

Three of these states—Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota—have Democratic Governors, while Ohio has a Republican Governor.

In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer is term limited, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is favored to be the party nominee, with her likely Republican opponent being African American Congressman John James, who has lost two US Senate races in the past.

However, three term Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, elected as an Independent, is a “wild card” in the race, and could win the Governorship.

In Wisconsin, Governor Tony Evers has decided not to seek reelection, creating a race where former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, who is African American, is the favored Democratic nominee against Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany.

In Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee in 2024, belatedly decided not to seek reelection to a third term, and while the situation is fluid, it seems likely that Senator Amy Klobuchar will decide to run for Governor, with her Senate seat safe until 2030, were she to lose the Governorship.

Businessman Mike Lindell of MY PILLOW corporation, who has a reputation of being a lunatic, and continues to claim that Donald Trump won the Presidential Election in 2020, is perceived as the frontrunner for the Republicans, although Scott Jensen, who was the Republican gubernatorial nominee in 2022, is considered to be planning to run again.

Finally, in Ohio, Republican Governor Mike DeWine is term limited, and the clearcut favorite for the party is tech businessman and 2024 Presidential contender Vivik Ramaswamy, who gained an arrogant, confrontational image, but now is trying to tone it down.

His Democratic opponent will be Physician and former Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton, who took a strong stand for vaccinations during the COVID 19 Pandemic, causing many critics to arise who condemned her approach to the once in a century health crisis.

At this point, it would seem that Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are likely to remain Democratic in gubernatorial races, while Ohio, which has become more extreme right wing in recent elections, sadly, is likely to elect Republican Ramaswamy, who would immediately become a major nightmare figure in American politics!

The Threat Of NATO Breakup Over Greenland Is Real!

Donald Trump is on the road to taking direct military action to seize Greenland if Denmark does not agree to hand over control of the territory to the United States.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is in crisis, as the nations in the alliance have vowed to back Denmark, and oppose annexation of the territory to the US government.

So we are on the cusp of potential military conflict, with nations that have been allied with the US for 76 years ready to confront US military forces, an unfathomable scenario.

NATO will crumble, and the alliance of the closest allies the US has–the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Canada, and all of the remaining nations in the 32 nation alliance–will face the threat of Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation taking advantage of the crisis to strike at some of the nations close to the Russian border, including Poland, and the Baltic States of Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania.

It is hard to fathom what can be done to stop Trump dead in his tracks from provoking potential war, and at the least, potential disintegration of the international alliance that has existed since the end of World War II!

This is a terrifying situation, with Trump totally unleashed and dangerous, and a threat to world peace!

One Year Of Vice President JD Vance: A Worrisome Scenario As Potential Successor In The Oval Office!

It has been almost a full year since JD Vance took the oath of office as Vice President of the United States,

It is an extremely worrisome situation that Vance is a heartbeat away from the Presidency, at a time when we have a demented, seriously abusive Commander in Chief, who seems in rapid decline, with the thought that he is unlikely to survive the next three years in office.

Republican Presidents and Presidential nominees have had a group of horrendous Vice Presidents and Vice Presidential nominees in the past six decades, but in many ways, Vance is worse than any of them, including the least government experience of any of them.

Some history—Barry Goldwater in 1964 had New York Congressman William E. Miller as his running mate.

Gerald Ford had Kansas Senator Bob Dole as his running mate in 1976.

Bob Dole in 1996 had former New York Congressman Jack Kemp as his running mate.

John McCain had Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008.

Mitt Romney had Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate in 2012.

Miller and Palin were particularly unqualified choices for Vice President, and Kemp and Ryan were just barely perceived as acceptable, while Dole was seen as a better choice than any of them.

But then, we had Vice Presidents who were horrors, including Spiro Agnew under President Richard Nixon; Dan Quayle under President George H. W. Bush; Dick Cheney under President George W. Bush; and Mike Pence under President Donald Trump in his first term.

Agnew was forced out of office for corruption and incompetence, and Quayle was clearly mediocre and not very bright. Cheney was competent, but abusive and scary, while Pence came across as too willing to bend to Trump, until finally, at the crucial moment on January 6, 2021, he demonstrated some guts and principle.

At the same time, other Republican Vice Presidents were seen as far more qualified, including future Presidents Gerald Ford under Richard Nixon and George H. W. Bush under Ronald Reagan. Also, Nelson Rockefeller under Gerald Ford served in an admirable fashion, concerning right wing Republicans when President Ford was twice threatened by potential assassins in the month of September 1975.

Now, we have JD Vance, with only two years as a US Senator, promoted by right wing billionaire Peter Thiel, and willing to say or do anything to promote Project 2025.

Vance has disgraced himself with his utterances on a multitude of matters in one year in the Vice Presidency, including his outrageous comments about Rene Nicole Good, who was murdered by ICE agent Jonathan David Ross, in Minneapolis two days ago.

Instead of trying to avoid conflict and soothe public discourse, this man, who has completely changed his view of Donald Trump over the past decade from critic to sycophant, is willing to divide and incite in every way possible on all kinds of issues.

The thought that he could, shortly, become President, is an absolute horror, and at this point, he appears far worse than ANY Republican Vice President or running mate in the past six decades!

To be perceived as worse than Agnew or Quayle in the Vice Presidency in particular, or Palin as a potential Vice President in particular, is making clear just how dangerous the present situation is!

The crisis the nation faces, with a reprehensible combination of Trump and Vance being the leadership of our nation, is a massive constitutional crisis without an acceptable alternative at present!

ICE Murder Of Woman In Minneapolis, And Lying About It By Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, And Donald Trump Calling Victim A “Domestic Terrorist” Beyond The Pale!

The ICE murder of 37 year old Renee Nicole Good by agent Jonathan David Ross is an atrocity that did not have to happen, and demonstrates how dangerous ICE is, in many ways like the Nazi Gestapo.

The outrage is even greater because Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, White House adviser Stephen Miller, and President Donald Trump jumped to judgment, and called the woman victim a “domestic terrorist”, before a full investigation by the state of Minnesota and the federal government in tandem!

And today, Vice President JD Vance added to his horrendous image by reaffirming what was said the day before, and saying ICE is ready to invade any location in its search for what he calls “criminal elements”, insuring that if he succeeds to the Presidency, the nightmare of Donald Trump will be perpetuated!

It IS ICE that are “domestic terrorists”, totally unleashed, and willing to victimize anyone, and intrude on churches, schools, and all other public places, and to break windows in cars, and use multiple agents to attack pregnant women, the elderly, young children and teenagers, and anyone who “seems” nonwhite in appearance!

It is interesting, however, that Thomas Homan, the so called “Border Czar”, was less willing to make judgment so quickly, as the video evidence is that the young woman was no threat to the agent who murdered her.

Now, the outrage has grown as the FBI is not allowing Minnesota agencies to participate in the investigation of the murder, which means they are likely to “whitewash” the agent who lost control and caused her death. So a full scale coverup is in process!

The American people at large must work to resist the clearly Fascist takeover going on, using the excuse of this tragic incident to impose what looks like martial law in the offing in the near future!

Militarized violence is now the new norm, and justified by the federal government, a total outrage!

Trump Lusting For Greenland A Threat To NATO And International Law And Stability, And Must Be Vigorously Opposed!

Donald Trump, clearly imperialist oriented, as John Tyler, James K. Polk, and William McKinley were in the 19th century, is lusting for the United States to take over control of Greenland, which has been a territory controlled by Denmark for the past three centuries.

Greenland, primarily ice covered, and having only about 57,000 people, has been an area utilized for defense by both NATO and the United States, but now, Donald Trump is threatening military action if Denmark is unwilling to give up control of Greenland and allowing the purchase of that vast land of significant natural resources, including oil, gas, and rare earth minerals.

The thought that Trump would be reckless enough to destroy the NATO alliance is horrifying, and would only encourage further aggression by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine and neighboring nations that once were part of the Soviet Empire before 1989.

It would also encourage Chinese aggression against Taiwan, and also endanger Japan and South Korea.

The NATO alliance of 80 years would be eviscerated, and six major European nations—Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Poland—have issued a joint statement condemning any threat to Denmark and its Greenland territory.

However, Stephen Miller, a key Trump advisor, has made it clear that the Trump administration intends to gain control of Greenland, in a threatening and aggressive manner, in an interview on CNN with Jake Tapper.

America is faced with a leader who has become drunk with power and ego, and is ready to upend the international order, that was stabilized after World War II, and has promoted defensive alliances that have succeeded in avoiding another world war for 80 years.

Donald Trump is promoting an international crisis that is totally unnecessary, as Greenland has already had an American military base, and Denmark is not against further American presence, but they are not willing to have America have direct control by purchase, and are outraged, rightfully, by threats of military force, which would destroy NATO!
