Wisconsin Gubernatorial Race Divides Democrats

The state of Wisconsin has no Senate race in 2026, but does have a gubernatorial race to succeed Democratic Governor Tony Evers, who chose not to run for reelection, after two terms, even though he was eligible under the state constitution to run again, had he chosen to do so.

The Republican nominee will be Congressman Tom Tiffany, but the Democrats are deeply divided between “Establishment” Democrats and “Democratic Socialists”.

Three Democrats are contending, with Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley endorsed by Governor Evers.

Also running is former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, backed by California Senator Adam Schiff, and state assemblywoman Francesca Hong, who is backed by California Congressman Ro Khanna, and identifies with “Democratic Socialism”.

The thought is that Hong may have an edge in public opinion polls, but would have more trouble winning the race against Tom Tiffany, than either Crowley, or Barnes.

Were Hong to end up as the nominee, she would be the highest ranking “Democratic Socialist” on the ballot in the nation in November, other than Michigan Senate contender Abdul El Sayed if he defeats Haley Stevens in the primary on August 4, more prominent than the two women in New York City and the woman in Denver who have been nominated, and likely will sit in Congress.

Hong would be seen, if she won in the primary on August 11, as the most prominent “Democratic Socialist”, as would El Sayed, if either won, other than NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

But there is strong concern that not only could Michigan’s Senate race go to the Republicans, but also that the Wisconsin Governorship could go to the Republicans, if the opposition can convice voters that El Sayed and Hong are too extremist in their orientation.

Four Midwest Governorship Elections 2026: Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio

There will be four Midwest Governorships up for election this fall of 2026.

Three of these states—Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota—have Democratic Governors, while Ohio has a Republican Governor.

In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer is term limited, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is favored to be the party nominee, with her likely Republican opponent being African American Congressman John James, who has lost two US Senate races in the past.

However, three term Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, elected as an Independent, is a “wild card” in the race, and could win the Governorship.

In Wisconsin, Governor Tony Evers has decided not to seek reelection, creating a race where former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, who is African American, is the favored Democratic nominee against Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany.

In Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee in 2024, belatedly decided not to seek reelection to a third term, and while the situation is fluid, it seems likely that Senator Amy Klobuchar will decide to run for Governor, with her Senate seat safe until 2030, were she to lose the Governorship.

Businessman Mike Lindell of MY PILLOW corporation, who has a reputation of being a lunatic, and continues to claim that Donald Trump won the Presidential Election in 2020, is perceived as the frontrunner for the Republicans, although Scott Jensen, who was the Republican gubernatorial nominee in 2022, is considered to be planning to run again.

Finally, in Ohio, Republican Governor Mike DeWine is term limited, and the clearcut favorite for the party is tech businessman and 2024 Presidential contender Vivik Ramaswamy, who gained an arrogant, confrontational image, but now is trying to tone it down.

His Democratic opponent will be Physician and former Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton, who took a strong stand for vaccinations during the COVID 19 Pandemic, causing many critics to arise who condemned her approach to the once in a century health crisis.

At this point, it would seem that Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are likely to remain Democratic in gubernatorial races, while Ohio, which has become more extreme right wing in recent elections, sadly, is likely to elect Republican Ramaswamy, who would immediately become a major nightmare figure in American politics!

It turns out that in the midst of the Trump Authoritarian Crisis the nation faces, that it is much more Democratic Governors than Democratic members of Congress who are actively on the attack against the abuses perpetrated by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and the utilization of the National Guard in Washington DC, Los Angeles, and threatened expansion to Chicago and other “Blue” cities and states.

In so doing, the following group of Governors are raising attention as leading potential Democratic Presidential contenders for 2028, including

JD Pritzker of Illinois
Wes Moore of Maryland
Andy Beshear of Kentucky
Tim Walz of Minnesota
Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan
Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania

In addition, other Democratic Governors, although not seen as likely Presidential contenders, are actively challenging the Trump policies including:

It is urgent that Democrats, who at present, only have 16 state governorships, win a majority of the 36 gubernatorial races taking place this November.

Among the crucial races to win are the following:

Andrew Gillum in Florida

Stacey Abrams in Georgia

Ben Jealous in Maryland

Gavin Newsom in California

Richard Cordray in Ohio

J. D. Pritzker in Illinois

Tony Evers in Wisconsin

Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan

With other large states in Democratic hands and likely to remain so, including:

Andrew Cuomo in New York

Tom Wolff in Pennsylvania

it would mean that Democrats would control most of the larger states’ executive branches, crucial for reapportionment of seats in state legislatures and the US House of Representatives after the Census in 2020.

Only Texas of the top ten states in population would be likely to remain Republican, and with North Carolina (Roy Cooper) and New Jersey (Phil Murphy) and Virginia (Ralph Northam) and Washington State (Jay Inslee) all under Democratic Governors, it would mean 12 of the top 13 states with nearly two thirds of the nation’s population would be controlled by Democrats.

Add Democratic states likely to remain so, including Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, Rhode Island, and the possibility of winning in Maryland, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, and New Mexico, and you have a majority of Democratic run state governorships. Finally, Nevada and Arizona seem long shots, but could, in a “Blue Wave” be won by Democratic nominees for governor in those states.

But even if not a majority of states, if the large populated states are won, it will benefit the Democrats in the coming reapportionment of seats in the House of Representatives.
