An All Time Record Of Eight African American Candidates For Governor In Midterm Elections Of 2026!

In the midst of the Trump Administration being involved in massive attacks on Civil Rights, an all time record of eight African American candidates to become Governors of their states are competing in the Midterm Elections of 2026.

Only three elected Democratic Governors have ever served—Douglas Wilder in Virginia (1989-1993); Deval Patrick in Massachusetts (2007-2015); and Wes Moore, finishing his first term as Governor of Maryland (2023-2027) and seeking reelection, and rumored to be a future Presidential contender in 2028.

Additionally, New York Lieutenant Governor David Paterson succeeded to the Governorship (2008-2010), after Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned due to scandals, that marred his brief Governorship, but Patterson had corruption issues arise, and he did not run to be elected in 2010.

Several African American candidates for Governor have lost, including: Democrats Stacey Abrams in Georgia to Brian Kemp in 2018 and 2022 and Shawn Wilson in Louisiana to Jeff Landry in 2023; and Republicans Daniel Cameron in Kentucky to Andy Beshear in 2023; Mark Robinson in North Carolina to Josh Stein in 2024; and Winsome Earl-Sears in Virginia to Abigail Spanberger in 2025.

In the 2026 Midterm Elections, there are five Democrats and three Republicans running for Governor, with several believed to be likely to win.

The most likely successes will be Wes Moore, running for relection in Maryland; David Crowley in Wisconsin; Aaron Ford in Nevada; and Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, all Democrats; and Byron Donalds, in Florida, a Republican.

Republican John James in Michigan; Democrat Jermaine Johnson in South Carolina; and Republican Lisa Demuth in Minnesota are considered long shots, unlikely to win.

Four Republican Gubernatorial Candidates A Total Disaster!

Arizona—Andy Biggs–is clearly an extremist right wing Republican Congressman, who is now involved in a controversy over having prevented an investigation into a Mormon sect a decade ago, an extremist group that promoted child sexual abuse while Biggs was then President of the Arizona State Senate. Biggs is seen as the likely Republican Gubernatorial nominee against Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs.

Colorado—Victor Marx–a first time politician, who claims he killed a person at age 7 when ordered to do so by his stepfather, and will not say if he has killed since then. He is the Republican nominee for Governor against Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser.

Florida—James Fishback–a white supremacist and antisemite running for the Republican Gubernatorial nomination, and using racist language against Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, the likely Republican nominee for Governor in Florida. Fishback is a long shot, with Donalds almost certainly the nominee of his party for Governor, not that Donalds is a moderate, which he most certainly is not.

Minnesota—Mike Lindell–the MY PILLOW businessman, and conspiracy theorist,who has claimed until this moment that the 2020 Presidential Election was fixed, and lost a case in court for his lies, causing him to lose a lot of his fortune and his reputation. He is now running to be the Republican nominee for Governor, even though he is not registered to vote in the state. His opponent, if he wins the Republican nomination, is well regarded Senator Amy Klobuchar.

Fortunately, in Arizona, Colorado, and Minnesota, the Democratic candidates for Governor—Katie Hobbs, Phil Weiser, Amy Klobuchar—are heavy favorites to win and keep those Governorships in Democratic hands.

In Florida, Byron Donalds is the heavy favorite to be the Republican nominee despite the challenge of James Fishback, and the Democrats are likely to nominate David Jolly, former one term Congressman, who switched parties, and is seen as having a reasonable chance to compete with Donalds in November.

Ohio And Florida Republican Gubernatorial Nominees Facing Racism From Within!

With the promotion of racism and white supremacy under Donald Trump, the Republican Party is now facing within its midst ugly racism occurring, most notably, in Ohio and Florida.

In Ohio, Republican Gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy, formerly a Republican Presidential contender in 2024, of Hindu Indian heritage and parents who are immigrants, with him having dark skin, is being subjected to verbal and other abuse by advocates of white Christian supremacy including Casey Putsch, who won 18 percent of the vote in the Ohio primary, and has been openly abusive about the background and heritage of Ramaswamy.

Meanwhile, in Florida, which has months until the Gubernatorial primary occurs in August, front runner Congressman Byron Donalds, who is African American but has a white wife, is being pilloried by James Fishback, who is a white supremacist, nativist, and Christian Nationalist.

Additionally, white supremacist influencer Nick Fuentes, who ironically is himself Hispanic, has gained a wide following with his racist, antisemitic, and sexist tirades, attracting lots of young men.

Christian nationalist pastors, and also Tucker Carlson, have added fuel to the fire as well.

While this author and blogger finds both Ramaswamy and Donalds distasteful to the extreme, it is shocking how they have become targets for more extreme Republicans than even they are, and are having to deal, therefore, with what Democrats have long had to cope with.

The number of members of Congress seeking nomination and election as state governors in the Midterm Elections of 2026 is a revelation of their disillusionment with being members of either branch of Congress.

Among those trying to be nominated and elected as governors are the following.

Two Former Republicans Running As Democrats In Gubernatorial Races In Georgia And Florida

In the highly significant states of Georgia and Florida, with Republican Governors retiring, there is a hopeful opportunity for two former Republicans who have switched to the Democratic Party due to Donald Trump’s abuses, to compete for their states’ governorships.

In Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp is term limited, and Democrats are seen as having a good chance to gain the Governorship, even though the state legislature is heavily Republican.

The Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, is a possible Republican choice, who had to deal with Donald Trump’s attempt to try to fix the Georgia Presidential election results in 2020, and refused to cooperate with Trump.

But Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, in office in the present term, is favored in public opinion polls and in endorsements, having succeeded former Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, who repudiated his Republican ties and has become a Democrat. He is one of two most likely Democratic choices, with the other being former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, with Bottoms at this point way ahead in endorsements and polling.

In the state of Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis is term limited, and the Republican Party has two major competitors to succeed him as the party nominee. They are Northern Florida Congressman Byron Donalds, and former State Speaker of the House Paul Renner, but with present short term Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins possibly entering the race, supposedly with the backing of Governor DeSantis.

Donalds is, at this point, way ahead in polling and endorsements, but subject to possible changes

The Democrats, who have not won the governorship since 1994, see their best chance with former Republican Congressman David Jolly, who has heavy polling and endorsement support, but will have a challenge from Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings.

Sadly, in both Georgia and Florida, it will be a major accomplishment if the Democrats win either race, with the odds in Florida a bit better, as polls indicate a tight race between Donalds and Jolly at this point.

Likely Republican Governor Nominees In 2026 State Elections

As attention starts to be paid to the upcoming midterm Gubernatorial elections, the prospect of many states having new Republican governors brings a sense of foreboding.

Many likely Republican nominees, and in most cases, likely winners over Democrats, is enough to cause sadness.

These cases of what this blogger and author considers “disasters” includes:

Alabama–Tommy Tuberville, presently Senator, and former football coach

Arizona—Congressman Andy Biggs

Florida–Congressman Byron Donalds

Michigan—Congressman John James

Minnesota—lunatic and conspiracy theorist businessman Mike Lindell

New York–Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Ohio—Corporate leader and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy

South Carolina—Congresswoman Nancy Mace

Tennessee—Senator Marsha Blackburn

Additionally, there are incumbent Governors who are horrendous, including:

Arkansas—Sarah Huckabee Sanders

Texas—Greg Abbott

At this point, Republicans would be favored in 7 of these 11 states, with Democrats having the advantage in Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, and New York.

Additionally, polls in Ohio indicate Amy Acton is gaining women’s support and those who believe in science, against Ramaswamy, so there is growing hope for Democrats to win the Governorship in that state.

And in Florida, former Republican Congressman turned Democrat David Jolly is also polling well, and has a decent chance to win over Donalds or any other potential Republican nominee, although it will be a difficult battle in the Sunshine State.

IF Democrats can indeed keep the Governorship in states that now have Democrats—Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, and New York—and somehow gain Ohio and Florida, it would be a great midterm gubernatorial election triumph!

One can assume at this point, that the other five states–Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas–are lost causes for Democrats!

Horrible Potential Republican Governors In 2026 Midterm Elections!

With the midterm 2026 State Gubernatorial Elections just a bit more than a year away, there is the potential for a group of horrible individuals running for the Governorship in Republican states winning executive control of their state governments.

These would include the following:

Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville

Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs

Florida Congressman Byron Donalds

Michigan Congressman John James

New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Ohio entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy

South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace

Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn

All eight of these individuals are highly controversial, overtly loyal to Donald Trump, and would promote the MAGA concept of the Republican Party in state government.

The odds at this moment, more than a year ahead of the elections, is that Tuberville, Donalds, Ramaswamy, Mace, and Blackburn would be odds on favorites to become their states’ governors, while Biggs, James, and Stefanik have a tougher battle ahead, with their states presently having Democratic Governors.

Potential VP Picks For Trump Contrast With Kamala Harris

There has been relentless criticism over the years of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Critics have said she is not bright, that she laughs too much, and that she is difficult to work with.

What it comes down to, however, is that she is a mixed race woman of India and Jamaica ancestry.

Harris has had great experience as District Attorney of San Francisco, California Attorney General, California US Senator, and now the 49th Vice President.

If suddenly called upon to assume the Oval Office, she would be far better qualified by experience and accomplishments than many of her predecessors.

When one examines the potential VP choices of Donald Trump, none match her experience, intelligence, and concern for average Americans.

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York is a lightweight sycophant, abandoning her once moderate views.

South Carolina Senator Tim Scott lost all respect when he said he “loved” Trump, while Florida Congressman Byron Donalds has made a fool of himself, in trying to justify “Jim Crow” racism. Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson is an embarrassment to be on the list at all.

Ohio Senator JD Vance, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton are among the worst MAGA Republicans in the Senate.

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, mostly unknown nationally but very wealthy, is also on the list.

This list makes former Vice President Mike Pence look great, but unlike Pence, they are all willing to bend to every whim and fancy of Donald Trump.

The Vice Presidency is a heartbeat away from the Presidency, and is not to be taken lightly!

But it seems very certain that both Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. are going to make a mockery of the office, only making it very clear how well qualified Kamala Harris is to take the Presidency, if the necessity arrives!

What a horrendous group all of these “contenders” are, with Tim Scott and Jesse Ventura being the “best” of a bad group of both, and neither matching Kamala Harris in quality and experience!

The Horrible Potential Candidates For Trump Vice Presidential Choice!

Speculation has begun for potential Vice Presidential running mates for Donald Trump, if he goes on to be the Republican Presidential nominee in 2024.

The emphasis is on race and gender, which is odd for Republicans who wish to deemphasize such factors, but a list has been drawn up that has individuals who would be, despite their race or gender, horrendous, and a danger to the nation if any of them were a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

They include:

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem
South Carolina Senator Tim Scott
New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders
Florida Congressman Byron Donalds
Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy
Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene

Also mentioned are former South Carolina Governor and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who is fast becoming the major alternative to Trump; and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Those two and Kristi Noem and Tim Scott are the “best’ of a horrible lot, with the other five truly nightmare choices!

Trump has degraded the Presidency, and now seems likely to be ready to degrade the office of the Vice Presidency!
