Bullying

Reflections On Karen Klein, Bullying, And Mitt Romney

A 68 year old grandmother, Karen Klein, in Rochester, New York, who has a part time job as a bus monitor on a bus with middle school students, was horribly abused by four 12-14 year old “bullies”, four jerks who need to be appropriately punished for their cursing and ridiculing of this adult, this senior citizen, who was there to protect them, and deserved proper respect and regard.

The bus on which this horrific incident occurred had a taping system, as likely all school buses now have, due to many examples of student abuse on each other, let alone on the bus driver or other adults supervising the buses of school systems throughout America.

One would think these jerks would realize they are being taped, which shows just how dumb and stupid they really are.

But the question is what is the appropriate punishment for this kind of behavior? Certainly, physical punishment is inappropriate, particularly at their age of 12-14, and would only teach that violence is used to punish wrongdoing.

What seems appropriate is to take away cell phones, computers, and play stations for a period of months; to take these jerks into a prison to show them what happens when one breaks the law; and to make them do community service for 90 hours each this summer; after writing letters of apology and meeting with Karen Klein in person to express their sorrow and apologies.

Having said that about the young boys involved, the question arises what should be done with the more than half a million dollars raised on the internet for Karen Klein, in order to send her on a “vacation”.

It is stunning that so much money could be raised, but it would be totally inappropriate for Karen Klein to keep all the money. Instead, she should keep maybe $5,000 for a “vacation”, and donate the rest to a good cause, such as providing funding for children who need life saving surgery and cannot raise that money, a regular occurrence, or providing extra funding for the Rochester, NY public schools so they can retain a few more teachers and counselors for their students in the upcoming academic year.

And then, there is another element to be considered here, too easily dismissed recently, and that is Republican nominee Mitt Romney, who acted as a “bully”, in a way actually more destructive than what these jerks did in Rochester, NY.

To have bullied a potentially gay student fifty years ago, to the point of having Romney lead a gang of boys who held a kid down, and forcibly cut his hair, is assault, and seems to have had a deleterious effect on this young man, who has since passed away, and seems to have been poorly accomplished in the rest of his life, with no way to know for sure what effect that incident had on his psyche. Romney was not 12-14 years old at the time, but rather 16 or 17 and should have known better, and he never paid the price for his bullying.

This reminds us of the issue of character, and to say he was only a “kid” is not an acceptable excuse, as Mitt Romney grew up to be a symbolic “bully” in the business world, and has an attitude of cockiness and arrogance that has remained with him in the last half century!

Mitt Romney should not be rewarded with the Presidency for his behavior back then, anymore than these jerks now should be treated with excuses now!

Mitt Romney: A Bully, Nasty, Cruel! Character Issues Make Him Unacceptable To Be President!

New information has emerged that Mitt Romney, when a teenager at a private boarding school, acted like a bully, and showed nastiness and cruelty toward two students who were perceived as gay, and also showed elderly abuse of a nearly blind teacher.

Of course, some will say: “Oh come on, have a sense of humor, please! Boys will be boys! You cannot hold teenage pranks and wildness against them later on in life!”

Sorry, but that does not ring for this author!

It is NEVER acceptable to be a bully, as we well realize today, when bullying for being gay, or short, or fat, or unattractive, or shy, or whatever, causes misery, depression, and often suicide of the victims! The scars from being bullied can last a lifetime and mar a person’s happiness!

Romney, along with others who feel guilty about what they did, held down a student and forcibly cut his hair, in one case. That is assault, and should have led to expulsion and legal action against the perpetrators, including Mitt Romney.

In another case, Romney made verbally abusive comments about a supposed gay student being a lady, and personal insults can really hurt, and should not be forgiven!

And in another case, Romney was involved in directing a nearly blind teacher into a door and wall, and having a hearty laugh after it, described as “giggly”! This is abuse of and lack of respect for a teacher, and being insensitive toward a disabled, elderly individual!

These are not laughing matters, and what is more infuriating is that Romney NEVER apologized for what he did, and just went about his life feeling no compassion or guilt, and first denied these events had ever happened. Only when a group of boys from that time all testified to the truth of these allegations did he say he did not remember, but wished now belatedly to apologize for his actions 48 years ago. Unfortunately, this is not enough!

This is an issue of character, as much as putting his dog on the top of his car for hours while traveling on vacation, leading to the dog having an “accident”, and telling us about this in a laughing matter, and saying the dog loved being on the car roof! How could he know that? Many people would call it dog cruelty!

This man is arrogant, feels privileged, has lied constantly on so many issues, and has demonstrated a lack of compassion and guilt for his actions. He is a terrible example for children with his bullying, nasty, cruel ways.

This is not just a childhood or teenage prank. It is a question of decency and character, and Mitt Romney fails the test of leadership.

This alone should be a reason to make sure we do not reward him with the office of the Presidency!

Gay Republican Zach Wyatt Courageously “Comes Out” Against Hateful Missouri Legislation!

The anti gay sentiment spreading through the Republican Party nationally finally convinced a Missouri Republican state legislator, Zach Wyatt, to condemn a bill being promoted in the Missouri state legislature that would ban any discussion in any classroom about gays and lesbians, including even the idea of fighting bullying.

This despicable legislation was courageously opposed by Wyatt, who also decided it was time to be honest to himself, and admit to the world that he was gay.

What a testimonial to courage and conviction, and it makes one wonder why so many gay Republicans, and there are plenty of them, do not speak out and fight against discrimination!

It is well known that there are many gay people who work for state legislatures and for members of Congress, and the question is how they can remain silent and only think about advancement of their careers!

It is also amazing that politicians themselves have no problem, in most situations, to the hiring of gay people, and yet they use gays and lesbians as an excuse to promote an anti gay agenda!

What is it about these political leaders and their staff members, that they exploit an issue and overlook discrimination and hate, simply to advance their own careers?

At least for now, let everyone applaud Zach Wyatt of Missouri for doing the right thing, and hopefully, helping young people tormented by guilt over their sexual orientation!

Disturbing Social Trends: Anti Gay, Anti Labor, Anti Women, Anti Immigrant, Anti Black

The news seems to be more disturbing by the day, as social trends are moving more and more in the direction of hate, prejudice, bias, and narrow mindedness.

Witness the following examples:

In New Jersey, an immature college student. Dharun Ravi, is convicted on all charges of a hate crime against a gay roommate who he streamed a liaison with another man on a webcam, causing that young man, Tyler Clementi, to commit suicide. What a stupid, and self destructive act by a young man who has now destroyed his life, after having done the same to the unfortunate Clementi, which will lead to Ravi’s prison sentence and likely deportation to India. So we have two promising young men at Rutgers University who have been tragically transformed by the prejudice and discrimination that is too widespread in this country, including by so called “religious good Christians”, which have led not just to this incident, but to the crisis of bullying that has caused many other suicides of gay youth, and this backed by right wing conservatives allied with the religious fanatics who do not promote the love of God, which they claim they believe, while practicing hypocrisy.

Then we have the example of a law firm in Deerfield Beach, Florida, which fired a whole group of workers who dressed in orange shirts for work, planning for “happy hour’ on Friday evening! Just for wearing an orange shirt, these people are summarily dismissed, and Florida state law, being that the Sunshine State is a “right to work” state, the employer can dismiss without any just cause or explanation, an outrage to all working people, who see conservatives and businessmen condemn labor unions which try to make work conditions better for all of us, even those not in labor unions. The average American has benefited from the labor movement over the past century, but yet labor unions are pilloried, and workers are abused, as with this example! And witness the anti labor actions in Wisconsin, Ohio, and elsewhere that have occurred in the past year!

The fight against women’s right to privacy and their dignity continues with restrictive legislation on contraception being pursued in yet more states, most recently in Arizona and Pennsylvania, on top of the outrageous vaginal probe law in Virginia and similar actions elsewhere.

Immigrants are facing widespread discrimination, whether legal or illegal, in Arizona, Alabama and elsewhere, and now we have the case of a basketball player, who is Puerto Rican and a citizen, facing chants of where his green card is, at a game at the University of Southern Mississippi. Immigrants are being abused, harassed, and victimized daily in the discriminatory, nativist mood that this nation has become obsessed with in recent years.

And African Americans, as always, face greater discrimination, so we have the case of a black teenager in Sanford, Florida, shot to death by a Neighborhood Patrol volunteer, who thought this young man was dangerous and suspicious, even though all he had on him was some Skittles and a soda, but leading to being shot in the chest and killed, and so far, no prosecution of what is obviously an unjustifiable action. It does not add to the image of Florida as to its handling of racial matters, reminding us of the days of segregation and lynching in the state’s past a half century and more ago!

The country is disintegrating from within socially, a very worrisome issue that must be addressed, with the one bright spot being media reporting and exposure, and the reality that liberals and progressives will not stay silent in the midst of these disturbing social trends!

A Path Breaking Week For Gay Rights In America!

This week in July 2011 will be remembered as the week of path breaking events for gay rights in America!

After a long period of patience, major progress is being made in the following ways:

1. On Sunday, the first gay marriages will be performed in New York City and around the state of New York, a month after the state legislature enacted this basic human rights issue.

2. The Department of Justice under President Obama is now advocating the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996, and hearings have been held to move toward repeal, although it is likely that will lead to resistance by Republicans in the House of Representatives.

3. The Defense Department is today certifying that they back the formal end of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the military, and that they see no problem of gays being openly accepted in the military, and that it will not interfere with the internal cohesion and unity of the armed forces.

4. Additionally, in a very touching manner, comedian Stephen Colbert of the Comedy Channel issued a video in which he talked about children being bullied and called “Queer” in middle school, and how when he was so bullied, although not being gay, a friend reacted in a way that disarmed bullies harrassing his friend. Colbert said, in serious terms, words cannot hurt you if you decide to think of yourself as a person who has value and significance and purpose, and that things will get better if one understands that words should not be allowed to interfere with one’s self esteem, so hang in there, and one’s life will become better with patience. This is a beautiful message that needs to be spread all over America, to prevent bullying from leading to young men and women committing suicide, and was the best possible action Stephen Colbert could possibly have taken to deal with the epidemic of bullying and resultant suicide occurring in America!

So the long road to human rights advancement in a new area of concern has been successful, and the New York legislature, Governor Andrew Cuomo, President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen, and comedian Stephen Colbert must be acknowledged and applauded for their courageous efforts in this regard!

Sexual Bullying: The Responsibility of Parents, Churches And Politicians!

Lately, there has been a noticeable increase in sexual bullying, with five young men ages 11-18 committing suicide in various ways after being harassed for being gay.

Of course, bullying also goes on at the middle and high school level for those who are short, fat, handicapped, black, hispanic, jewish, muslim and other factors.

All of it is regrettable and is avoidable, but the gay bullying is the worst right now, an epidemic!

This is a very serious matter, and must be addressed by parents who must cease their prejudices and fears, as it is passed on to their children!

But it is also the responsibility of churches, where pastors preach against gays, and politicians who exploit the issue for their own benefit, to stop and realize that they are responsible morally for the hate that they peddle! 🙁

It is time for people of religion to stop peddling hate, and for politicians to work to UNITE the American people, instead of dividing them!
