On the issue of advocacy of Environmental Reform, it is clear that Democratic Presidents have been, to a much greater extent, the champions of protections of our natural resources, our national parks, our national monuments, and our wildlife refuges, than have Republican Presidents.
Historians and other experts on environmental history have come up with the following ranking list of top Environmental Reform Presidents:
Theodore Roosevelt
Richard Nixon
Jimmy Carter
Barack Obama
Lyndon B. Johnson
Joe Biden
Franklin D. Roosevelt
Bill Clinton
Abraham Lincoln
Woodrow Wilson
There could be some debate about the order of ranking, but it is certainly acknowledged that the first four Presidents listed are easily the top four in American history.
Notice that there are three Republican Presidents and seven Democratic President on this list, and only Richard Nixon is on the list from the last century, starting with the 1930s.
At the same time, five Democratic Presidents in the past century, chronologically FDR, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden are on this list.
So with the exception of Richard Nixon, there is no “modern” Republican President as a champion of the environment.
