Today, in the year 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and started all major league sports toward full integration!
Sixty four years later, the battle for civil rights goes on! There is still discrimination, much of it hidden, against African Americans.
But also, we have widespread discrimination against Hispanics and Latinos, as well as against Muslims, and gay Americans! And there are still remnants of prejudice against Jews and Catholics as well!
Native Americans, Asian Americans and women also still face prejudice and denial of equal opportunity!
So as we celebrate Jackie Robinson on this anniversary, which revolutionized major league baseball, remember that the battle for civil rights endures in a nation where too many people still have no problem with racial, ethnic, gender, religious or sexual orientation discrimination!
There appears to be considerable “buyer’s remorse” in several of the states who elected radial right wing Tbag governors. For some reason, I find this quite funny….well, it would be funny if it were not so serious for the good citizens in these states…especially public workers. I have spoken to some friends in Florida…deeply right wing they are….and when I asked them about how they feel about their governor and what he is doing to Fo,I sense a new reticence, attempts at making excuses and or elucidation of “taking points” they have heard from the Gov, I’ts all pretty pathetic.
I am pleased with the past few days and Pres.Obamas speeches. Gish it feels so empowering to hear him blasting the repubs and Rans budget. Loves the look on Ryans face whikle sitting there receiving an earful from the President. Ryan was positively spitting nails! LOL,,, he had been lead to believe he was goingto be presented with an olive branch and the President kneeling at Ryans feet. I don’t think they see it yet….that they are step by step marching toward the cliff over looking down into the deep dark abyss
