Illegal Immigration

Target Stores Should Be Boycotted: Citizens United Case Rears Its Ugly Head! :(

In January, in the Citizens United Case, the Supreme Court changed a long held legal restriction on corporations spending money on political campaigns!

Now the effects of that decision are coming home to roost! Target Corporation of Minneapolis has decided to spend money and intervene to back an extremist right wing Republican candidate for Governor in that state!

The Republican nominee supports the Arizona immigration law; supports the abolition of the minimum wage; and endorses a group that condoned the execution of gay people!

Target gave $150,000 support to this candidate, state representative Tom Emmer, and has defended its support! Of course, if the minimum wage disappeared, Target could join Walmart in being anti union, and attempting to pay the lowest possible wages to its workforce, with no sense of morality as to what it is doing!

Under these circumstances, all progressives and liberals should cut up their credit cards, and refuse to spend their money at an organization with such despicable views, and such a high level of arrogance!

The Reality Of Illegal Immigration: They Fulfill Jobs No One Else Will Take!

With much of the Arizona Immigration law on hold with the injunction by a federal judge, it is time for everyone to recognize the reality on the subject!

What is that reality? While no one wants to promote illegal immigration, and there is no doubt that it is a problem in regards to security, the reality is that illegals fulfill many job roles that no Americans will take!

A report on CNN was very revealing about this. Who do we think picks our fruits and vegetables in the fields of California? Illegal immigrants, who are paid eight dollars an hour and do back breaking work that no Americans have applied for, are those who do this, and without them, we would not have our fruits and vegetables!

Who is the majority of people working on lawn care, cleaning houses, working in hotels and motels on room service, working as dishwashers and busboys in restaurants, and many other low wage jobs that Americans run away from for employment? Illegal immigrants do these jobs, and without them, we would not have these various services done for millions of Americans!

Maybe the problem is that too many Americans are too fickle and picky about work they will accept, so maybe the work ethic is at issue!

But until there is widespread acceptance by Americans of these kinds of work, illegal immigrants will do what they have to do to survive, with the vast majority of them hard working, sacrificing for their children, paying taxes, being good law abiding people beyond the reality of how they came to this country!

Most are not drug runners, criminals, or involved in other unsavory activities, and it is unjust to label them all in the same negative description! Many are children who are here because of what their parents did, and now suffer the consequences as adults, but just want a chance to succeed in America!

We need more border security and policing, and the removal of illegal immigrants who are detriments to our society, but we cannot at this point deport millions of hard working people who actually contribute to our work life every day in ways most Americans do not appreciate!

So the nativists, who have always been against every immigrant group in America in the past, must be fought by decent Americans, not encouraged in ways that when we look back in the future, we will regret! πŸ™

A Detailed Response To My Critics On Illegal Immigration!

The author of this blog has been writing and presenting his viewpoints on all kinds of political and historical issues for almost two years now, but never has there been the kind of reaction that occurred yesterday after I published an entry on the Arizona immigration legislation and Governor Jan Brewer!

The reaction was so “thick and fast” that I have to believe that someone saw it, was angered by it, and spread the word to a whole group with similar sentiments! Honestly, I never thought that my blog was spreading that “far and wide”, and that reactions could be so numerous in such a short span of time!

I had a couple of people who responded who seemed to think that I was refusing to publish what they said, which was certainly NOT TRUE! πŸ™‚ I just wanted to wait till the fury calmed down and everyone had had their chance to vent, and that is why I am now responding!

I never realized that those two words , NOT TRUE, would infuriate and irritate so many people, and please understand it was NOT my intention to anger and alienate people by use of that term, but my point is that there is much evidence from sources such as CNN, the NY Times, the Washington Post, the Arizona Republic, and public officials in Arizona itself that show that there have been exaggerations in reports of what is going on in that state!

Let me make it clear: I have not been in Arizona, and obviously, I do NOT have first hand evidence on what is going on, but am relying on media sources which MAY be manipulating the reality there! I do NOT claim that any media source is absolute truth, and I have been struck by the personal stories that many of the critics presented, and it does not make me happy to see that at least some people are experiencing “hell” from the Mexican drug cartels and the constant flow of illegal immigrants into the Southwest!

Understand that I do not support the continuation of illegal immigration, and feel that the US government MUST DO MUCH MORE to deal with the crisis, including thousands more National Guardsmen, and insisting that the Mexican government do more to deal with the crisis on the border!

Mexico has become a national security problem of the highest order, the most since the Mexican Revolution period of 1910-1920, and we MUST do more to crack down on the crime problem and the drug crisis!

But at the same time, to believe, somehow, that our country can literally deport maybe 12 million people is unrealistic, so a path to eventual citizenship after paying fines, paying back taxes, learning English, proving ability to hold down a job, and waiting in line for years for citizenship, is essential, and is basically the “old” McCain-Bush-Kennedy immigration reform bill of 2007!

And to say that because illegal immigrants have children in this country, that therefore those children should be denied citizenship, defies the 14th Amendment! It is frustrating, but should the “sins” of the parents be visited on their children? I do not think that is just, and is against the American way!

Let me also say that I have no intention of resigning as a commentator on this blog, or leaving my teaching positions, as I have had a great impact on generations of students and teach a balanced curriculum based on facts and information, not propaganda as we hear and see on talk radio and Fox News Channel! I make history and politics come alive, and have had hundreds of students over the years tell me that I had a great positive effect on them!

Let me also say that I am NOT a Marxist, a Communist, a Socialist, and am not that derogatory term used by one of the respondents (a spic), a term that sickens me!

Why is it that people have to use racist and derogatory terms about people they do not understand or know? πŸ™ Why can’t people accept that we are all “God’s Children”, and treat all people of all nationalities and ethnicities and religions as being as “good” as we are? Particularly disturbing are those who would say they are religious people, but have no problem in trashing others who are different from them! πŸ™

Also, let me make it clear that I am not connected to the Obama Administration; do not have my job due to them; and that I do not have favored tax treatment, and never had had such! πŸ™‚

I am also disturbed that personal attacks are seen as necessary by some of the respondents, calling me a “dumbass”, a “jerk”, an “a___h___”, an “idiot”, and using the F word and S word as well! All this does is make the person saying or writing this lose all legitimacy!

Why can’t people who disagree do so in an agreeable way? And why do some see it as essential to use capital letters, which means they are shouting and yelling, instead of being civil?

I want to thank the more civil respondents who gave me other sources or ideas to investigate this topic! I also am saddened by the difficulties that people on the border are apparently suffering, and I hope this whole crisis can be resolved by legislation in Congress this year or next year, but to do so, the Republicans have to be willing to contribute, rather than be obstructionist, as they have constantly been throughout the 18 months of the Obama Administration!

Finally, even if you are not happy with President Obama, we should all hope for his success and wish him well, rather than ill, as this is our country, for all of us on all sides of the political spectrum!

We need to unite and deal with the problems facing our country, rather than snipe at each other! We need civil discourse, and I hope to contribute to that as I have attempted to do all along on this blog!

Yes, I am a progressive and a liberal, but that is not anti American! I have the right to my views, and again, I welcome your responses, all of you who read this blog, but please be respectful and civil as I aim to do! I wish to promote discussion and debate, but not anger and fury!

Oh, by the way, I am also NOT a traitor; am NOT an illegal immigrant and have no relatives who are illegal immigrants; don’t wish to live in Mexico, Iraq, or Russia; and feel that while English is our major language, all Americans need to learn Spanish as part of the reality in this nation, with Hispanics now the largest minority in America! In Canada, there are dual languages (English and French), and elsewhere most people learn English as well as their native language! We need to stop hating the world and realize we are a very small part of this world, about FIVE PERCENT, and we have to be part of the world, not isolate ourselves in bitterness!

I have said what I needed to say, and I hope this entry will clarify matters for all who read my blog! πŸ™‚

Lies And Fabrications In Arizona About Illegal Immigration: Governor Jan Brewer A Disgrace! :(

With the Arizona Immigration law being challenged in court by the Obama Administration, less than a month before it is supposed to go into effect, the supporters of this discriminatory law are hard at work promoting fear and hysteria through the use of lies and fabrications about the effects of illegal immigration on the state!

The leading proponent of deception is the disgraceful Governor Jan Brewer, who sees it as a method to win reelection this fall, and could not see the truth if it stared her in the face! πŸ™

Investigation of numerous accusations about illegal immigrants shows the following realities:

1. Bodies have been beheaded and left in the deserts of the state–NOT TRUE!
2. Border violence is on the rise–NOT TRUE!
3. Phoenix has become the Number Two Kidnapping location in the world–NOT TRUE!
4. Illegal immigrants are responsible for the deaths of most law enforcement officers–NOT TRUE!
5. Most illegal immigrants crossing the border are involved in drug dealing–NOT TRUE!

The Arizona Republic newspaper and the FBI statistics show all of the above are fabrications, and that crime has not increased, and in many areas has declined in recent years!

But Jan Brewer and Senator John McCain are utilizing these lies to promote fear among Arizona citizens to win reelection, without any concern for the truth!

Both should be ashamed of their fear mongering, which is now also leading to a new movement–to deny birthright citizenship to children born in this country of illegal immigrants, a move which would be unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution! πŸ™

But then, does the Constitution really matter, if one does not agree with it? It is amazing how people manipulate the Constitution for their own benefit and claim to be respectful of that sacred document, but only when it benefits their prejudices! πŸ™

Nativism Spreading: Will Oklahoma, Utah, And South Carolina Follow The Lead of Arizona? :(

Just as the US government has sued in federal court to prevent the Arizona immigration law from being put into effect on July 29, there are strong indications that at least three other states are planning similar actions next year! πŸ™

The three states are not all that surprising, when one considers the reputation that these states have gained by their political choices!

Oklahoma, the state of Senators James Inhofe and Tom Coburn, arguably two of the worst Senators in American history, is one of them!

A second state is Utah, a Mormon dominated state, which has just defeated a strong conservative, Robert Bennett, for another six year term in the Senate, in the GOP state convention. Bennett was a reasonable man, so of course, he was defeated, and the ensuing primary runoff of two Tea Party favorites led to the nomination and likely election of Mike Lee, a candidate with similar views as Rand Paul in Kentucky and Sharron Angle in Nevada!

And the third state is South Carolina, the state of Senator Jim DeMint, also one of the worst senators in US history! But this is also the state of Governor Mark Sanford, who has stayed in office despite his embarrassing sex scandal, going to Argentina to see his lover behind his wife’s back, and not informing state officials of his location while absent! This is also the state of Congressman Joe Wilson, who yelled “You lie!” at President Obama as he gave a speech to the nation on Capitol Hill!

These three states would rate with many observers as among the three worst governed, so it is not surprising that they would be seriously considering nativist legislation!

The question is whether the US government’s action regarding the Arizona immigration law will be able to prevent this unwise and discriminatory trend spreading to these three states, and possibly others! πŸ™

Barack Obama And Immigration Reform: Time For Action!

President Obama has finally given the speech on immigration that he should have given much sooner!

Obama’ speech hailed the importance of immigration in American history, and the contributions that immigrants have made to our development and success!

He also said what many seem to have forgotten: that America is a land shaped by immigration, and that we are all immigrants, other than native Americans!

He called upon Republicans who had supported immigration reform under President George W. Bush to stop playing politics and back necessary reform now!

He emphasized the need for illegal immigrants to come out of the shadows; pay fines and taxes; learn English; and get in line to become citizens but wait till it is their time, rather than expect to become naturalized before those who came legally!

What is clear that there must be more efforts to protect our borders to the South, and that while we cannot deport 11-12 million illegal immigrants ( a totally impractical matter), we must concentrate on ridding our country of those undocumented people who have committed crimes, are involved in drug dealing, or are members of gangs!

We should not have illegal immigrants facing situations such as having parents sent back without their minor children; having parents forced out while their adult children serve in our military; having them being afraid of being stopped while shopping or driving and faced with immediate detention; being victimized by employers who refuse to pay them a living wage; being harassed by state or local governments based on racial and ethnic profliling and stereotyping; and having politicians exploit the issue of illegal immigration by sowing hate and division!

Where is the former John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and other GOP senators who were courageous enough to defy the conservative think tanks and media and show understanding and principle on this topic?

It is time for a push for immigration reform, and for the demagoguery and discriminatory legislation that has been endemic, to cease! πŸ™

Obama Administration To Challenge New Arizona Immigration Law In Court!

The Obama Administration has decided, rightfully, to challenge the new Arizona Immigration law in the federal courts as a violation of federal authority to deal with immigration, and as an example of discrimination against the largest minority group in America, the Latinos or Hispanics! πŸ™

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton “let the cat out of the bag” when she revealed this on June 8 while visiting Ecuador, when she was asked about this controversial piece of legislation!

Apparently, Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona is furious over this, and the answer is let her be furious! πŸ™

This law is reverberating on Arizona economically and in public relations, and if they were willing to face reality, that this makes the state look like the “Mississippi of the 1960s”, then they should withdraw the law before it goes into effect on July 29!

But as it is, the law will not go into effect on that date as the US government will do what needs to be done to have the law considered in the federal courts, where, hopefully, it will be declared unconstitutional!

However, it is essential that the US government start to deal seriously with the issue of illegal immigration, so that no other states will move in the direction that Arizona has taken!

Arizona And “Anchor Babies”: New Challenge To The Constitution!

Arizona, already rapidly gaining the image of being the new “Mississippi of the 1960s” is now considering another step in the direction of discrimination! πŸ™

Against the United States Constitution’s guarantee that anyone born in the country is a citizen at birth, the state plans to disallow citizenship to children born of “illegal” immigrants, those often called “anchor babies”!

This would be a method to enable, in a more easy fashion, to deport “illegal” immigrants, as the argument that their children are American citizens would be ended!

But it would be in violation of the Constitution that these anti immigrant nativists claim to honor and worship! It would be the height of hypocrisy, but what else is new? πŸ™

The Righteousness Of The Passage Of The DREAM Act!

A major problem area on the subject of “illegal immigration” are the children of “illegal” immigrants who are brought to this country, grow up in this country, and wish to receive a college education and begin a career in this country, but are dogged by their “illegal” status through no fault of their own!

A present case on this involves Eric Balderas, a Harvard student, with plans to become a cancer researcher, who was detained at the San Antonio airport this week, and given a date for a hearing at which he is faced with immediate deportation to Mexico, a country he has never lived in, and where he knows no one!

The proposed DREAM Act is cosponsored by Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois and Republican Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana, who sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in April, calling for a moratorium on deportation of young people who could be saved from such action once this legislation were to pass. The DREAM Act would allow a path to citizenship for undocumented young people who serve in the military or attend college.

The DREAM Act is the acronym for the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act.

The fact is that young Balderas was brought into the United States at the age of 4 to escape a domestic violence situation in Mexico, and this is the problem with the hardline “illegal immigration” crowd that just calls for the deportation of millions of undocumented people , most of whom have never committed a crime, have been law abiding citizens since they entered illegally, and are now living in fear and trepidation as to what their futures might be!

So it is good time to grant Balderas a waiver and to pass, as soon as possible, the humane DREAM Act, and have the President sign it in a public ceremony!

The Silence Of Republican Leaders Speaks Legions!

The Republican party, being the party “out of power” in Congress and the White House, supposedly has the advantage to gain a large number of seats in Congress and in the governorships this November, but this is not a good time for the Republicans!

The issue of illegal immigration has been stirred into a major controversy by the Arizona law scheduled to go into effect in July; the refusal of the Republicans, except for a few Northeasterners (Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Scott Brown), to back financial reform at a time when so many Americans want strict regulation is a major shortcoming; the libertarian candidacy of Kentucky Senate nominee Rand Paul makes many Republicans speechless, trying to figure out how to deal with him in a public relations sense; and the “family values” party having to deal with so many members who have ethical and moral problems is an embarrassment! All of these issues make being a Republican in the age of Barack Obama very difficult!

Can the party allow the Tea Party mentality best represented by Rand Paul to take over their party agenda, which is, in many ways, so different? Even Rand Paul now trying to back BP Oil in the Gulf of Mexico disaster further complicates how the GOP is to react to this “loose cannon”, who will provide more “cannon fodder” for the media and the Democratic Party!

Can you imagine a week where House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and Republican National Chairman Michael Steele are strangely silent? When has a week gone by when the top GOP leaders have avoided the news media?

This is a clear sign of the bind that the Republican party is in, as it should be a year of great gains in the states and the Congress, and yet so many problems and burdens exist, and there is no easy answer as to how they handle these various “hot potatoes”! πŸ™‚
