Ted Kennedy

A Tribute To Ted Kennedy’s Memory: Health Care Reform!

Senator Ted Kennedy died pursuing his dream of Health Care reform legislation.

The Congress and President Obama have now paid tribute to his memory, and the greatness of this man in our legislative history, by enactment of Health Care reform on Sunday evening.

It was a touching moment that Kennedy’s widow, Vickie, and his son, Congressman Patrick Kennedy, were present today when President Obama signed this bill, the most important in 45 years, into law.

The accomplishment of this reform will only add luster to the image that Ted Kennedy was one of the ten greatest Senators in American history, a man for the ages, who in many ways accomplished more than his brothers, John and Robert Kennedy!

Scott Brown Goes Independent On Jobs Bill: A Surprise For Republicans!

Newly elected Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown is making news by going Independent on his first big vote–a procedural move to allow a Jobs bill to be adopted by the Senate.

At first thought, this may be surprising, as Brown bragged, after he beat Margaret Coakley, that he was the 41st vote to stop health care reform.

But I think Brown recognizes that his victory is not really a trend at all, but rather a fluke, and lucky break for him, due to a dull, boring, opponent.

Had a Kennedy run for the seat of Ted Kennedy, Brown would not now be a Senator. The odds are heavy that a Kennedy will run to reclaim Ted Kennedy’s seat in 2012, when a full term comes up for a vote.

The rumor is that Joe Kennedy, former Congressman from 1987-1999, and son of Robert Kennedy, will run, and it is hard to imagine Brown winning over him, or really any Kennedy. If he is going to have a chance to win, however, Scott Brown must break with his party a lot, and show he is more a New Englander than a Republican, or else his tenure in the Senate will be indeed very brief!

Meanwhile, let’s applaud Brown for dolng the right thing for his constituents and the nation’s jobless!

The Kennedys Leave Congress

An era is ending as Patrick Kennedy, Democratic Congressman from Rhode Island and son of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, announced his retirement at the end of this Congress.

There will be no Kennedy family member in Congress in 2011, after having had one or more Kennedys since 1947, with the exception of two years in the early 1960s.

John F. Kennedy served in Congress from 1947-1961 when he was inaugurated President. After a brief two year hiatus, Ted Kennedy was elected to his brother’s Senate seat and served from 1963 to last August, nearly 47 years. In addition, Robert Kennedy served from 1965-1968, and Joe Kennedy, Robert’s son served in the House from 1987-1999, and Patrick from 1995 to the end of this Congress.

This is in many ways a sad moment as the Kennedy Family served well and honorably overall, although of course any politician can be criticized in some way. Still, we owe our gratitude for their public service, as they could have chosen other pursuits but chose to do what they did, and in a way that overall we can admire and salute!

The Massachusetts Voter’s Mindset And The Election Of Scott Brown

A new poll commissioned by the Washington Post expresses the attitudes of Massachusetts voters, which led them to elect Scott Brown, the Republican nominee, to the US Senate vacancy created by the death of Ted Kennedy.

According to the poll, frustration with the direction of the government, dissatisfaction with the health care plan of the Obama Administration, and opposition to federal government activism motivated their vote in the special election.

This is very interesting, as it demonstrates just how confused and stressed so many people are these days, not only in Massachusetts but throughout the nation. We are in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the 1930s, and millions of Americans are being badly hurt by loss of employment, homes, and most important of all, what all people need: a sense of security!

People were angry in 2008 at the Bush Administration and voted the GOP out of power in Congress even two years earlier than the repudiation of the Republican presidential candidate, John McCain. Now they are furious because Barack Obama has not had a magic potion to solve the myriad of problems that people face on a daily basis, so they struck out against the Democratic nominee and by implication, the Obama Administration.

In 2008, the American people wanted a movement toward regulation and government activism, but now they seem, by this state poll, to repudiate it!

But do the American people really want us to go back to the era of Bush, the GOP and sweetheart relations with big business and the banking industry and the corporate world?

Or is it rather that they may vote the Democrats out as the scapegoats, put the GOP back in, and then throw the rascals out again when they realize the Republicans have absolutely NO solution to the economic problems we face?

In other words, the American people seem to think Rome was built in a day, as the saying goes. They are unwilling to give any person or party a decent chance to resolve issues, and instead are like children who want what they want NOW, not later. There is no desire to accept delayed gratification.

And as far as Massachusetts disliking the health care plan, the explanation is clear. Due to Republican Governor Mitt Romney, Massachusetts in 2006 adopted a statewide health care plan which covers 98% of the people, more than any other state, so why should citizens of Massachusetts be enthused by a plan they do not need?

And unfortunately, the ultimate reality is that a vast majority of people cannot have empathy or concern for people they do not know, so the fact that 45 million or more Americans do not have health care does not concern them, because after all, they have health care, so who cares about others? Only if they actually know someone in that reality of lacking health care might they feel some concern, but then again, think of the money they are saving and then put the idea to bed and dismiss it from their mind.

Conclusion is that the sense of “We”, rather than “Me”, still dominates the American psyche, partly by human nature, but a lot of it by the promotion of “Me” since the advent of conservatism under Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. And also, finally, we are in for a long period of back and forth support of both political parties, as nothing that either party does or represents is bound, it seems, to keep public support for long. We are, indeed, in a deep period of crisis on a massive scale. The American spirit of optimism is GONE, for a long time, tragically! 🙁

The Irony Of The Upcoming Anniversary Of Barack Obama’s Inauguration

It is extremely ironic that as we arrive on Wednesday at the first anniversary of Barack Obama’s inauguration as President, that we face the strong possibility of the loss of Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat to a Republican tomorrow evening!

Martha Coakley, the Massachusetts Attorney General, well liked in her state and seen as a solid figure in her state government role, faces the strong likelihood that, because of an extremely lackluster campaign by her, and a very vigorous, active campaign by Scott Brown, the state senator who is her Republican opponent, that the GOP will win that race and be able to halt health care reform in its tracks by having 41 Republicans senators, all committed to a filibuster of any legislation on the subject.

It would be a great tragedy if that happened, and it is hoped that enough Democrats and independents will show their commitment to Barack Obama, who still has a 60 percent popular support level in the most recent Massachusetts polls, and vote for Martha Coakley, who is likely to be an outstanding Senator if only she can get past her lackluster campaign, and go to the Senate to continue Ted Kennedy’s work!

This is one case where we must have our fingers crossed and wait with baited breath for the momentous results tomorrow evening!

Essential For Ted Kennedy Senate Seat To Remain Democratic!

There is alarm in Democratic circles in Massachusetts as it seems clear that Martha Coakley, the Attorney General and candidate for Ted Kennedy’s seat, is facing a tough race against Republican Scott Brown, who has made clear that he will vote against health care reform, an act which could effectively end the chances of the legislation that Ted Kennedy fought for over so many years!

To top it off, there is an independent “Tea Party” candidate named Joe Kennedy! Of course, the founder of the Kennedy dynasty was Joseph P. Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy’s oldest son was Joe Kennedy, Jr, a Congressman for a dozen years in the 1980s and 1990s! But this Kennedy is not part of that family and has a desire to confuse voters and elect Scott Brown.

It is hoped the voters of Massachusetts on January 19 will honor the memory of Ted Kennedy and elect Martha Coakley as his successor!

Ted Kennedy Is Happy Today!

The late Senator Ted Kennedy may be gone, but he is not forgotten!

His widow, Vickie, was present this morning when the Senate passed the Health Care Reform bill 60-39, and she had tears and was hugged by many at the moment when it became official.

Vickie Kennedy had indicated a few days ago that while the legislation was not exactly what Ted would have wanted, since it does not have a public option, that her husband would still be pleased that the Senate and the House have finally taken action on an issue first proposed by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1912, and actively pursued since President Harry Truman’s administration.

So this is indeed a time to rejoice, and as the years go by, the Democratic party will be able to improve the legislation piecemeal, and a majority of Americans will applaud and appreciate the sacrifices that the Democrats went through to gain the passage of this essential reform!

Sarah Palin And The “Base”: Does She Have A Future Nationally?

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin continues to be the center of attention, despite her resignation as Governor this summer.

She is still being speculated about as a possible Presidential candidate in 2012, despite her thin credentials. She continues to have a loyal fan base, while much of the country looks at her in disbelief, and many cannot stand listening to her speak.

Most Republicans with any sense in their heads fear that she could possibly win the GOP nomination for 2012, and the former McCain campaign manager thinks she would be a total disaster for the party, and would lead to a landslide on the level of the Barry Goldwater defeat in 1964.

But Sarah Palin needs to thank John McCain for her good future and present success. Just over 13 months ago, she was a nobody. Now, hard to believe, she is a best selling author of a memoir that is not due to be out until November 17, but is already number one on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, based on preorders, and selling better than Ted Kennedy’s memoir.

To compare Kennedy to Palin, and have her more successful in an unpublished book over a book already published by one of the greatest senators of all time, is a sign of the rapid decline of common sense and intelligence in this country.

It is indeed an indication of the decline of this country, and a desire to live in the past, rather than the future. The odds are good that Palin will seek the White House, and it will be the most interesting story of the next election cycle.

Paul Kirk Jr. Interim Replacement For Senator Ted Kennedy

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has selected Paul Kirk, Jr, the head of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, a close aide in the past to Senator Ted Kennedy, and former Democratic National Chairman during the 1980s, to be Senator Kennedy’s interim replacement until the election to replace Kennedy on January 19, 2010.

Kirk was favored by the widow of Senator Kennedy, as well as his two sons, as he represents the continuation of the Kennedy commitment to social and economic reform, and is a devout Kennedy loyalist.

Kirk is an excellent choice to promote the memory of Senator Kennedy, and he will be proud to be a vote in favor of health care reform over the next few months, a cause that Ted Kennedy spent decades advocating.

I am sure that Ted is pleased up in heaven that a person of true commitment and principle will be his voice as a bridge to the future. Good job, Governor Patrick! 🙂

Time To Honor Robert LaFollette, Sr. And Ted Kennedy Together!

The passing of Senator Ted Kennedy, the great spokesman for modern American liberalism, brings to mind the exceptional career of the late Senator Robert LaFollette, Sr, “Mr. Progressive”, of the early 20th century Progressive Era.

Coming to the Senate about two thirds of a century apart, Kennedy and LaFollette both came to personify the fight for social justice, regulation of corporations, and political reform. One was a Democrat from Massachusetts, while the other was a Republican from Wisconsin, but despite their large separation by time, they both personified the best in the American tradition of caring about others and standing for change to promote an equitable society.

Earlier this year, Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, himself a model of modern progressivism and liberalism, sponsored a bill which was also supported in its introduction by Senators Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, and–get this–Senator Ted Kennedy himself—to honor LaFollette with the minting of a silver commemorative coin regarding his life and legacy–in the year 2011. Along with the US Mint coin, a separate proposal called for the Congressional Gold Medal to be awarded to LaFollette posthumously by the President of the United States.

This is a brilliant idea and needs to move forward, but I propose both bills be modified, so that the US Mint coin and the Congressional Gold Medal be awarded not just to Senator LaFollette, but also to Senator Ted Kennedy, who LaFollette, were he alive today, would be very appreciative of the continuation of his vision by the liberal Democrat from Massachusetts.

This proposal to honor both LaFollette and Kennedy is a non partisan bill, with its purpose to appreciate the progressive and liberal tradition and promote its continuation, with very possibly Senator Russ Feingold as its new champion and leader. We need such leadership in Congress, but supported in full by President Barack Obama.

The death of Senator Ted Kennedy is time to gather the forces of change and make this sad event a moment to recharge for the many battles and struggles ahead. Onward to greater accomplishments! 🙂
