From 1968 to 2011, there were close to 1.4 million deaths from gun violence, and this is before the massacres in Aurora, Colorado; Newtown, Connecticut; and elsewhere in the past year.
But when one looks at all deaths from American wars, we discover the total is slightly less than 1.2 million!
With gun violence escalating in recent years, we had over 32,000 deaths in 2011, about equal to the losses in the three year long Korean War from 1950-1953.
From 1999 to 2010, we had about 365,000 gun deaths, almost equal to the 400,000 losses in the four years of World War II.
The years 1981 to 1998 saw 620,000 deaths from guns, about the same as in both sides of the four year Civil War.
With 2,500 to 3,000 deaths per month on the average now, it means in a year we match the totals of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Spanish American War, the Persian Gulf War, the Afghanistan War, and the Iraq War combined!
Anyone looking at these statistics would have to be troubled by the fact that we are the most violent Western nation by far, and yet there are those who believe nothing can or should be done about this tragedy!
This one is specially for you Ron, I know you will enjoy it. And by the way, I know that Dan Bongino lost the election, but that is not the issue here, the issue is the message on guns. Enjoy! LOL! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=R8WLXhahw_A
So we have give or take about 40,000 death related to car accidents per year. In 1968 52,728 people died , while in 2011 around 32,000. In 45 yrs that’s about 1.8 million death more or less. Should we ban cars? After all cars are murderous!
Juan, I can see that you are a CURMUDGEON, so must find fault with everything I state! LOL The point is that people need a drivers license and insurance to drive, but not the same for gun ownership! Is that right? I bet you will say YES, because cars are not mentioned in the Constitution!
I can see what Dan Bongino is saying, but I also note the crazy, sick people who responded on You Tube, true revolutionaries and radicals, some ready to assassinate our President, and if you do not think that is scary, then you are truly mentally ill!
Oh Ron, of course out of 155 comments as far as I could tell there is one nut-job who was totally inappropriate with his comment about Obama and ….well you know I don’t want to repeat it because it is distasteful. So because of a couple of sick people lets disqualify the other 155. In other words, what that guy posted is beyond discussion, of course he’s nuts. No one in their sane mind would argue the contrary. But again , that is not the issue here.
As for obtaining a drivers license and insurance, sure its a local state issue, not a federal government issue. There are no federal driving licenses. And as for guns the majority of the states regulate their sale and possession. I believe such a simple data is readily available here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_by_state . Some states require registration, owner licenses, background check etc. If you like more liberty restriction regulations and law, well either convince your fellow citizens in Florida or move to New York where they will not only restrict your Second Amendment , but how much salt and soda you can drink!! Thank God we have Federalism!! So just as with drivers licenses local state government do regulate more or less. The issue here again, is FEDERAL REGULATION and the 10th Amendment. Otherwise why not have a National Drivers License Law??
The car vs gun argument is missing one fact–99% of gun deaths are intentional.
Less than 1% of car deaths are.
In that rationale, swimming causes death–maybe we should ban water.
The fact that they are intentional proves my point, people kill not guns! But if you want to ban all guns, well just go ahead and propose a constitutional amendment abolishing the 2nd amendments right to bear arms.
Juan,
OK, you win. Let’s ban people.
That’s right, twist people’s statements around. Nobody said ban all guns.
You’re the one making stupid comparisons.
Thanks, Paul, for putting Juan in his place! 🙂 LOL
NRA honcho Wayne LaPierre is fighting a losing battle. This is one he can’t win because the Sandy Hook Elementary School killings, from last December, were the catalyst for a nation that is saying, “You know, there does need to be something in the way of a standard for gun ownership and access.” LaPierre is owned by the gun-manufacturing industry. He works for them. He is not concerned with freedoms. He proved that by turning his deaf ears to NRA members who do want greater strength in legislation.
Let’s hope, D, that you are correct in your assessment!
