Time For Obama Voters Of 2008 To Recognize Need To Vote In 2010!

Every indication is that opponents of Barack Obama, including Republicans and conservatives and Tea Party Movement activists, and many independents, are enthused and motivated to vote, in order to paralyze the President’s agenda, and also to attempt a repeal of much of what he has been able to accomplish domestically, despite the Great Recession we are experiencing! πŸ™

The lack of motivation, and the high level of apathy among Democrats and progressives, is threatening any possibility of further achievements in the next two years, including dealing with the economic suffering of millions of Americans! πŸ™

Many are unhappy that the Great Recession is still very serious, and many are disillusioned that much of what they hoped would happen, has not occurred!

Many wanted a stronger health care law, and a more severe control of Wall Street! Many wanted to see quicker action on gay rights and many other social issues! Many wanted Barack Obama to be much more to the left than he has been!

BUT, if these Democrats and progressives “sit on their hands” and refuse to give financial support and vote for the party in the midterm elections, the result will be a greater blow to what these activists want!

This is not an ideal world, and while many on the left might wish Obama had done more of his agenda, they need to understand that everything that has been accomplished could be negated if the right wing wins the election, leading to total stalemate and gridlock between a potential GOP Congress and a Democratic President over the next two years! πŸ™

What the author has just asserted was also echoed by Vice President Joe Biden last evening in an interview on the Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC!

Robert Gibbs, Barack Obama, And The “Professional” Left!

President Obama’s Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has made a lot of enemies recently between his comment that the Democrats could lose Congress, and now his criticism of the “Professional” Left, which he says would not be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was President, and would not be happy unless there was no Pentagon budget, and we adopted the Canadian Health Care system!

It is clear that Gibbs believes in being blunt, which provokes many on the left, and some have called for him to be fired. But this is not the solution to the issue of his outspokenness!

Rather, it is important that the Obama Administration and the cable channels (particularly MSNBC) work to understand each other!

It is the job of the cable channels and others on the progressive side of the political spectrum to push and prod the administration into accomplishing as much of the progressive agenda as is humanly possible!

They are not the enemies of Barack Obama, but rather are disappointed that he has not gone further than he has on many issues, and has been too concerned much of the time with his conservative critics, often caving in on many issues to try to gain support from Republicans, who unfortunately, have no interests in any cooperation or bipartisanship! Instead, they unleash vicious, hateful rhetoric designed to divide the nation, and undermine efforts at economic recovery and international understanding! πŸ™

But at the same time, Barack Obama HAS BEEN a disappointment in many areas!

Obama has not closed down Guantanamo Naval Base, as he had pledged, and moved terrorist suspects elsewhere, as he had stated he would do within one year!

He has allowed his government to deport more illegal immigrants than his predecessor, George W. Bush, most of them not in any way criminal, but here without legal documentation!

He has allowed soldiers who are valuable to the military but gay in sexual orientation to be dismissed, while the government procrastinates on ending “don’t ask, don’t tell”!

He compromised and gave up on a “public option” on health care, so that his health care plan is far from ideal!

His administration failed to focus on the creation of enough jobs through public works programs, the rebuilding of the infrastructure of America, and the economic stimulus has been inadequate. But Obama has refused so far to fight for another economic stimulus, which is sorely needed for economic recovery! Instead, the likelihood is a double dip recession, exactly what conservatives and the GOP want to happen so as to gain political points! πŸ™

Obama has escalated our war in Afghanistan, and casualties have mounted, without any real evidence that any progress is being made in that war torn country!

He has failed to accomplish any progress on the matter of global warming and climate change, despite all the right rhetoric, and this is an essential topic that must be dealt with!

His response to the BP Oil Spill Crisis was lacking in leadership early on, and has done a lot of damage to his public opinion ratings!

He has allowed the issue of border security to be used against him by his slow response to the need for more National Guardsmen, only now signing legislation for a beefing up of troops at the border, and with the need for many more than have been provided for in the legislation!

Obama has disappointed in his diplomacy on the Middle East, antagonizing many Jews by his seemingly siding with the Palestinians, although in reality that is not the case, but perception often matters more than reality!

These are just ten issues that trouble progressives and liberals, and it is the job of the so called “Professional” Left to hold the President’s “feet to the fire”, in order to prod the President toward his “friends” and his own inclinations!

But the answer is not to fire Robert Gibbs, but come to the conclusion that the criticism is well meant, that the “Professional” Left wants only the best for Obama and for the nation, and that a truce needs to be declared!

Instead of sniping and infighting, what is needed is to do what Franklin D. Roosevelt did in the third year of his first term–turn to the left and accomplish his greatest goals in office, including the Social Security Act, which as said in the next earlier entry, celebrates its 75th Anniversary today! πŸ™‚

A Horrifying Scenario: Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin! :(

Chris Matthews on MSNBC today described a possible horrifying scenario in 2012: Presidential nominee Sarah Palin! πŸ™

Matthews’ reasoning was that Sarah Palin has a positive image among 76 percent of Republicans, and as the only woman likely to run for President, and with views that place her on the “hard” right of all men who might run, that she would have a decent chance to do well in early primaries and caucuses in 2012! πŸ™

The argument is that Palin could win the Iowa caucuses because of the strong evangelical influence in that state! While the theory is that Mitt Romney, as a ‘favorite son” New Englander in the Boston TV market, would win the New Hampshire primary, it would be dismissed as insignificant!

Then, the theory is that Palin would go to South Carolina, a strong evangelical Christian state, and would win over Romney, who is a Mormon (not considered Christian by many evangelicals)!

Then, she would go to Michigan, the home of Romney’s father, who was a potential Presidential candidate in the 1960s, and where Mitt Romney grew up, and in a multi candidate race, in a state with high unemployment and a terrible economy, would pull out a fraction of the vote large enough to be seen as the winner!

If all this happened, the argument of Matthews is that Palin would have “momentum” to win the GOP nomination! πŸ™

This scenario is a nightmare, but to believe it would actually happen in a time of disillusionment and bad economic times, is seen as an extremist action of Tea Party Movement types, which could present the country with the most extreme GOP candidate since Barry Goldwater in 1964!

And actually, Barry Goldwater, being intelligent and knowledgeable, and ultimately a social liberal in future years, and a libertarian of substance as compared to Rand Paul, would be preferable to a woman who has no substance, no knowledge, and is truly an example of a KNOW NOTHING mediocrity rising to the top! πŸ™

Of course, even if Sarah Palin were to win the GOP nomination, is there any scenario that can imagine her defeating President Barack Obama?

ONLY if one believes that the nation is ready to go down the drain completely, and elect the most incompetent, idiotic candidate that would ever have been selected by a major political party in the history of the United States!

If that happens, the nation is truly doomed in a complex world that requires a person of brilliance and insight, which Sarah Palin has inability to be! And if that were to happen, it would condemn John McCain forever in history for having given us this woman as a legitimate candidate for national authority! πŸ™

Eliot Spitzer And Kathleen Parker Team Up For New CNN Show In Fall!

Former NY Governor Eliot Spitzer, who was forced out of office after 14 months due to a sex scandal, is now about to take on an hourly news program on CNN, cohosting it at 8 pm weekdays with Kathleen Parker, a 2010 winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for the Washington Post, who defines herself as a “rational conservative”!

Spitzer had a dry run as a substitute talk show host for MSNBC, and proved to be very stimulating, and effective in arguing ideas and points with conservative guests! Parker is very articulate when she has appeared on cable shows, and it sounds like a great debate and point-counterpoint will develop between Spitzer and Parker, as well as their guests!

This could be another “Crossfire” type show, and it sounds as if CNN is attempting to challenge their tough opposition at 8 pm–Bill O’Reilly on Fox News Channel and Keith Olbermann on MSNBC! All for the better! πŸ™‚

The Rising Political Stars Of The Decade 2000-2009

MSNBC has come up with a list of political “risers” who were unknown at the beginning of the decade and have become its stars, all with the potential to become more significant in the coming decade.

At the top of the list, of course, is President Barack Obama, who was an unknown state senator from Illinois when the decade began, and who almost no one would ever have predicted would be President by the end of the decade!

Other Democrats on the list are Chuck Schumer, Senator from New York, who is number four, and seen as a potential Senate Majority Leader, and who has already helped to elect 14 Democratic senators as head of the Senate Campaign Committee.

Also, outgoing Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, number eight on the list, was a finalist for Vice President, and is now head of the Democratic National Committee. And number ten is Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, who has been noticed nationally for his leadership, despite the small population of his state, and some see as a Presidential candidate in 2016.

The other six on the list are Republicans, headed by number two, Sarah Palin, who can been as a positive and negative force at the same time. She could be a leading factor in the 2012 presidential sweepstakes, although it is hard at this point to imagine her winning the Presidency or even the nomination of her party.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is number three, despite his poor speech after the State of the Union speech this past spring. He also adds diversity to the GOP, with his ancestry from India, and his youth, being still under 40.

The newly elected Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, is seen as a bright light for the future, and sometimes called the next George W. Bush, but one wonders if that is a positive or negative assessment!

Two young bright stars of the future, at least on paper, are South Dakota Senator John Thune and Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor, the House Minority Whip. Both are in their 40s and are seen as potential presidential material in the future, and Cantor as a possible future Speaker of the House, if the Republicans were to win back control of that chamber.

The oddest person on the list, and all based on promise and expectation, is Florida senatorial nominee Marco Rubio, former State House Speaker, who has tied Governor Charlie Crist in polls for the Senate race for November 2010. Were he to win that Senate seat, he would be another young bright conservative star in the GOP lexicon, along with Thune and Cantor, and he is only 38!

Interestingly, Rubio is listed as number five, Thune as number six, and Cantor as number seven on this MSNBC list. This may be partially due to Rubio coming from a larger populated state than Thune by far, and Cantor being a Congressman, not a Senator.

Honorable mentions on this MSNBC list are GOP Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who is seen as very conservative; former Utah GOP Governor Jon Huntsman, who is now Ambassador to China under President Obama; Missouri Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, interestingly the only woman on the list other than Saran Palin; and Virginia Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb.

Overall, this is a very interesting list, and of course others could be named to the list as the next year moves on toward the midterm elections of 2010. Particularly, I would note New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who is seen as likely to challenge and defeat Governor David Paterson in a Democratic primary, and go on to win a landslide victory over former Congressman Rick Lazio, who has no challenge after former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the race. Of course, Lazio lost to Hillary Clinton for the 2000 Senate race, and is not given much of a chance to defeat Cuomo, although if Paterson was in the race, Lazio would have a fighting chance to win the governorship. The belief is that if Cuomo won the governorship, he would be a possible contender for the White House in 2016.

As always, the politics of the future will be as fascinating as the politics of the past! πŸ™‚

Assessing The Political Downfalls Of The Past Decade

MSNBC has an interesting analysis of which politicians suffered the greatest political downfalls in the decade now ending.

Most of the people on the list are there because of scandals. These include the following because of sex scandals: John Edwards, Mark Sanford, Jim McGreevey, Eliot Spitzer, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, William Jefferson, and John Ensign.

Those who had financial scandal include Tom DeLay, Rod Blagojevich, and Bob Ney.

Others are on the list because their reputation declined because of electoral defeats or high ratings of negative popularity due to their governing tactics. This includes George Allen, Joe Lieberman, Rudy Giuliani, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rick Santorum, Tom Daschle, and Jon Corzine.

Note that only four of these listed above are still in elective office, and two of them–Mark Sanford and Arnold Schwarzenegger–will be out at the end of 2010.

This leaves only John Ensign and Joe Lieberman, whose Senate seats are up in 2012. It seems highly doubtful that Ensign will be able to be reelected due to his sex scandal. On the other hand, Joe Lieberman, running as an Independent, cannot be so easily read off as a loser, since he already went this route in 2006.

Yes, Lieberman has infuriated many liberals in the Democratic party, but he has been a survivor, and it is very likely that he might be the one survivor of these so called “political downfalls” who will continue to play a role in American politics with his head held high. The same cannot be said about any of the other seventeen people on the MSNBC list!
