Month: July 2020

Not Much To Be Happy About On Independence Day 2020

Tomorrow, America celebrates the 244th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, but there is not much to be happy about.

We are precisely four months away from the most important election since 1940, and the fear is that, somehow, Donald Trump, will manage to fix an election, where every public opinion poll imaginable shows him losing in every single “swing” state, and not by close margins in most of these states.

A constitutional crisis is likely, and the country is so stressed that it could lead to bloodshed and violence, possibly endangering Joe Biden, and whoever is his running mate for Vice President, about a month away from announcement.

The challenge for Joe Biden is massive, not only to win, but to govern in an effective way, starting January 20, 2021.

The most important thing is for every American to take his or her responsibility, and get out there and vote, and encourage everyone he or she knows to do the same, as lack of voting only helps the most dangerous and unhinged President in our history!

Civil Rights Anniversaries In July And August Remind Us Of What Is Unfinished

On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, outlawing segregation in public places, employment, and education, based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.

On August 6, 1965, Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, outlawing racial discrimination in voting.

On July 26, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans With Disabilities Act, which outlawed discrimination against disabled people, including requiring reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities, and imposing accessibility requirements on public accommodations.

These three laws are worthy of applause after 56, 55, and 30 years, but it does not mean that the fight for civil rights is over, not at all, considering that Donald Trump has done everything imaginable to undermine the civil rights of people of color, the disabled, and the poor in general, as well as working to undermine the civil rights of gays, lesbians, and transgender people!

With a more right wing trend on the courts, due to Donald Trump appointments, the battle for those basic civil rights will continue to have to be fought by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and People for the American Way, among other groups engaged in the fight for enforcement of these significant milestones.

Half Of Nightmarish 2020 Completed, With Half To Occur: What Is Next?

Half of the year 2020 is gone, and it has been an horrific six months:

The impeachment trail of Donald Trump, where his Republican Party refused to recognize the danger he presents, and his being in office since early February has been a series of disasters.

The outbreak of the Corona Virus Pandemic, with Trump not taking it seriously from Day One onward.

The economic collapse, which has caused the second Great Depression, but affecting a population three times larger, and no ending to be seen, with so much more desperation, homelessness, and hunger as the result.

The racial discord which has developed over the George Floyd murder by police in Minneapolis, and Trump inciting more racial animosity.

The refusal of Trump to protect Americans in combat, and labeling the bounty paid by the Russians to Taliban fighters to kill Americans in Afghanistan, as a hoax.

Five nightmares and four months to Election Day, 125 days from today, and then 78 days to Inauguration Day!

Will America survive intact over the next 203 days is the issue, extremely worrisome!

The health, safety, and lives of Americans is at stake!
