Is America Ready To Elect A Gay Man As President? The Rise Of Mayor Pete Buttigieg

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg has been the big surprise of the political season, coming across as very intelligent, very competent, very charming, and very inspiring as a potential Democratic Presidential nominee.

If elected, he would be only 39 years and one day old on Inauguration Day 2021, making him by far the youngest President, nearly four years younger than Theodore Roosevelt and more than four and a half years younger than John F. Kennedy.

The fact that Mayor Pete is gay and has a husband, Chasten, who would be First Gentleman, has not harmed him, except among older generation religious hypocrites, including the evangelical Right, who would not vote Democratic in any case.

But if we could elect a Catholic in John F. Kennedy and mixed race African American in Barack Obama, both at young ages (43 and 47 respectively), why could we not elect a younger gay man who has more knowledge, education, compassion, and common decency than Donald Trump?

And were Mayor Pete to be the Vice Presidential running mate instead, imagine the debate between him and Vice President Mike Pence from the same state, Indiana—a gay man against the most hateful anti gay basher in American politics?

Mayor Pete would “slaughter” either Donald Trump or Mike Pence in a nationally televised debate!

‘Pete Buttigieg Is Not a Progressive’

    By Jacob Weindling (04.04.2019)
    https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2019/04/pete-buttigieg-is-not-a-progressive.html

The word “progressive,” means something. It’s not just the basic definition of moving progress forward, but it is a political ideology that stands opposed to the tenets of the ideology of liberalism. Liberalism approaches politics from the standpoint that the capitalism-based status quo is worth preserving, and policy focus should be on fixing its deficiencies around the edges. Progressivism takes the attitude that the status quo is the problem, and the only solution is to get rid of the system perpetuating the unsustainable status quo.

This is important because whether or not it gets covered, the dramatic ideological split on the left will have a massive impact on the 2020 election. In 2016, 43% of the Democratic Party did not vote for the party’s hand-picked nominee. Progressives are not some small faction of the party, and in fact, given that millennials prefer socialism to capitalism, you could define our generation—the largest in human history—as largely “progressive.”

I bring this up because Pete Buttigieg is having a moment in the early 2020 Democratic Primary, and the former McKinsey consultant has (falsely) branded himself as a progressive. Right or wrong, this is simply not a progressive position.

    …

Progressive and liberal are the same thing. That’s why they are used interchangeably by us and other progressives we know.

Pragmatic Progressive, I totally agree with you that “Liberal” and “Progressive” mean the same thing, and are interchangeable.

Theodore Roosevelt, Robert La Follette, Sr, George Norris were all “Progressives”–and when FDR came along, the term was changed to “Liberal”–and now, I see them, as you do, as interchangeable, and while my blog title is “Progressive”, I am a proud “Liberal” of the Hubert Humphrey tradition years ago!

Precisely correct, Pragmatic. Someone who is liberal or progressive is open minded and believes in progress.

The opposite of that is conservative. Conservatives are close minded and want to stay backwards living.

Republicans offer 1950. I vote for Democrats because they offer modern times. I want to live in 2050, not 1950.

  7. Southern Liberal June 5, 2019 4:14 pm

My bet is Elizabeth Warren is going to be your first female president.

Southern Liberal writes, “My bet is Elizabeth Warren is going to be your first female president.”

    No.

I thought there was potential, circa 2012 and through 2015, but since 2016 it has been clear.

The interview in this video (and, although I don’t generally like Sam Seder, even he and his show understood) gives us an example why Elizabeth Warren will not be president of the United States.

    Sam Seder doesn’t get it.

  10. Former Republican June 6, 2019 10:51 am

First – Second Leia’s opinion. Elizabeth Warren has some very good policy proposals that are in favor of the poor and middle class.

Second – We are going out of town on vacation. We’ll off the grid for a few days.

Princess Leia writes, “Sam Seder doesn’t get it.”

    Can you be more specific?

D – Aunt Leia, Former Republican, and their daughter, Southern Liberal have gone off on vacation.

Pretty much, Aunt Leia, like the rest of the females amongst our family and friends, is sick and tired of white male pundits underestimating the ladies in the field, thinking that only a white man can beat Trump.

It is females, especially women of color, who are leading the resistance against Trump.

Women won in historic numbers in 2018, showing their is a hunger for women leaders in our government.
