Senator Rand Paul Becomes Poll Leader For GOP Presidential Nomination: What Does It Mean?

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, the son of libertarian favorite Ron Paul, former Congressman from Texas, has suddenly emerged as the leader in two polls–the CPAC straw poll and the New Hampshire straw poll, both in the past ten days.

This is seen as very surprising to many observers, and it certainly upsets Establishment Republicans who see Rand Paul as far from who they prefer to be the Republican Presidential nominee in 2016.

Rand Paul seems to appeal to young people, who also liked his dad, due to their desire to cut down American involvement in overseas interventions, but that is seen by critics as an unrealistic isolationism, which becomes more problematical with the Russian takeover of Crimea, and the possible intervention in the rest of Ukraine.

Rand Paul’s desire to cut the federal government and spending dramatically in a downward spiral also appeals to many young people, but worries those concerned about the growth of poverty and the decline of the middle class.

And Rand Paul’s statements about the Civil Rights Act of 1964, in regards to the dislike of “forcing” businesses to serve customers they do not want to serve, is also alarming to ethnic minorities, particularly African Americans and Latinos.

Rand Paul’s opposition to women controlling their own reproductive lives also is an alarm bell to many.

There are many who think Rand Paul is a shallow person, who should not even be considered Presidential material.

Are we ready for a libertarian isolationist in the 21st century, after the growth of government in the 20th century, and engaging in wars to promote freedom and liberty and justice in the world?

Are we ready to negate TR, Wilson FDR, and LBJ in domestic affairs, and turn inward in foreign policy?

These are the questions all Americans have to consider, and the thought of Rand Paul possibly becoming President terrifies many Republicans, as well as American citizens who feel that he cannot walk in the shoes of our greatest Presidents!

“These are the questions all Americans have to consider, and the thought of Rand Paul possibly becoming President terrifies many Republicans, as well as American citizens who feel that he cannot walk in the shoes of our greatest Presidents!”

American’s shouldn’t consider this question too seriously, as I see Paul standing no chance of being elected. The problem the GOP has is voters such as myself. American’s who are somewhat in the middle. The only GOP candidate that would even receive my consideration is Huntsman. With that said, as long as politicians keep sticking to “Party Platforms” that are approved by the RNC and DNC, I believe you will see more and more support for third party candidates. I know this fact frustrates a lot of people, but the days of “If you waste your vote, the bad guy may win” mentality are just about coming to an end. At least for this voter.

I believe it was Tommy Lasorda that said, “No matter how good you are, you’re going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you’re going to win one-third of your games. It’s the other third that makes the difference.”
I believe this famous baseball quote fits well with what I’m saying.

Very interesting comment, JOB, and fascinated that you find Jon Huntsman the only GOP candidate you could accept. I feel the same way, as does Robert or Bob, who is new on here recently. Is the GOP listening at all, and can they realize the quality of Jon Huntsman? We shall see!

Or maybe, can Jon Huntsman realize he belongs in the Democratic Party?

  4. Ronald March 18, 2014 3:16 pm

If Huntsman was a Democrat, he would give Hillary, Joe, and all the others a real run for their money! LOL

I guess anyone to the left of Attila the Hun doesn’t qualify to be a Republican any more in some people’s estimation.

  6. Ronald March 18, 2014 6:17 pm

The saying used to be that Antonin Scalia was to the “Right” of Attila the Hun!” LOL until Clarence Thomas, and then, Samuel Alito, came along! LOL At least, Scalia has intelligence, which is hard to say for the other two, particularly Thomas!

  7. Mark March 18, 2014 6:20 pm

Ronald, you bought the myth created by some leftwing writers. Serious students of the court note that over time Scalia is the one who follows Thomas. The other argument just comes from the desire of leftists to punish black people who dare to think for themselves, as Thomas has been a much greater force than Scalia.

  8. Ronald March 18, 2014 6:24 pm

NO, Mark, that is NOT the case, but simply your crazy mind! Thomas NEVER says anything, and Scalia is, literally, BRILLIANT! You are so full of you know what, it is coming out of your ears! Thomas is NO Thurgood Marshall, and is a disgrace on the Court, lacking all ethics, having conflict of interest constantly, and should be removed from the Court, but he would claim a lynching, just as he did when he lied about sexual harassment!

Professor, There may be an element of truth in that statement.
I heard Scalia’s favorite comedian is Marcelle Marceau.
Thomas just refuses to speak in pubic, er, public at the SC.

  10. Ronald March 18, 2014 7:13 pm

Paul, you give too much credit to Thomas, but if you want to agree with Mark, fine. I will stand by my statement, that Thomas is unfit for the Supreme Court, and I really do not care what comedian Scalia favors. It is clear to me that Scalia is the conservative intellectual leader of the Court, while Breyer is the liberal intellectual leader of the Court!

    Professor,
I have been hung by my own petard. My attempt at humor went awry. I think someone who took advantage of every affirmative action available to him and then turns around and says it is not needed at all anymore receives no admiration from me.
Marcelle Marceau is a mime. Thomas doesn’t speak in court.
Thus, my connect the dots didn’t connect. Ah, a mime is a terrible thing to waste.

  12. Ronald March 18, 2014 7:55 pm

Oh gee, Paul! I was tired, after a busy day, and misread what you were saying! Sorry about that, and glad you do NOT agree with Mark! LOL

    Hey Paul….I got it..LOL

The 2016 Republican and Democratic U.S. presidential nominations will go to most funded candidates. So, I think that’s not a fun answer to provide. But it is my way of saying that Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and others will not win the GOP’s nomination if not one of them tops the competition with funding for the primaries.

  15. Mark March 19, 2014 8:16 pm

“NO, Mark, that is NOT the case, but simply your crazy mind! Thomas NEVER says anything, and Scalia is, literally, BRILLIANT!”

Talking is not the main job of a SC Justice. When it comes to writing opinions, it’s Scalia who over time started to follow and adopt the views of Clarence Thomas, not the other way around. So if Scalia is brilliant, Clarence Thomas is super brilliant, since he first thought of and persuaded Scalia on how to approach many decisions, much more than Scalia persuaded Thomas.

Just do a little research Ronald. Otherwise you’re just parading your ignorance and even laziness to do basic research.

  16. Ronald March 19, 2014 9:02 pm

Look in the mirror, Mark! I have read a lot about the Supreme Court, and this is the FIRST I have heard such drivel, probably gained from Fox News Channel or some right wing propaganda organization!

The fact is that Thomas has had massive conflicts of interest, and has shown disdain for the role of Associate Justice, and is seen as someone who is extremely arrogant, as he gained his career on affirmative action, but does not want anyone else having that edge.

So no one on the right points out that Affirmative Action got him where he is, with his inferior intellect, while they attack Obama and his brilliant intellect! What hypocrisy and double standard, well practiced by the extreme Right in their mission to deny equal opportunity!
