The Speaker of the House and the Budget Committee Chairman have thrown down the gauntlet to the right wing Tea Party Movement members of its Republican caucus, and to the pressure groups and talk radio and Fox News Channel critics.
And the good news that 169 members of the GOP caucus backed John Boehner and Paul Ryan, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, a bit of a surprise since Cantor tends to hobnob with the radicals a good deal of the time, is welcome!
While this means the budget bill will stabilize the economy, and allow some progress next year on some items on the agenda, it is almost certain that IF the Tea Party challenge succeeds in 2014 House and Senate races, challenging incumbents, then Boehner will no longer be Speaker of the House, and Ryan may be ousted as Budget Committee chairman.
One would think that Boehner and Ryan are moderates. which is extremely far from the truth, but they are at least responsible legislators, who realize that with divided government, some negotiation and compromise is essential, in order to get anything done.
The hope is that the tumult in the GOP will enhance chances of the Democrats winning back control of the House, and with a Senate where the filibuster is rarely used due to the new 51 vote majority requirement, hopefully the next Congress in 2015 will make us forget what a disaster the 113th Congress has been, the worst in modern American history!
There is no room for negotiations with individuals who want to further indebt our country or refuse to follow the oath they swore to when elected.
Ok, Dave, so destroy our economy completely, and allow the rich to become ever richer, while the rest of us are impoverished, heh? I guess you are one of the top one percent, whose wealth, along with the top ten percent, being multiplied by massive tax cuts under Reagan and George W, put us in the mess we are in, along with an unnecessary war in Iraq and a failed war in Afghanistan. Now punish the middle and lower class by constant refusal to negotiate. That will solve our problems, along with a return to the Gilded Age mentality, right, Dave? You are clueless!
Yes Professor, “Know Nothing Davy” is clueless. It was just reported this week that Ohio is I one of the largest use of religious based private education school vouchers supplied to students going to these substandard private schools. The report also went on to note that those students are grossly under achieving the public school sector students.
This is the inherit problem with religious based schools. Education progress is born of doubt and inquiry. The Church never doubts, never inquires. To doubt is heresy, to inquire is to admit that you do not know. The Church does neither.
As John Stuart Mill who was a Member of Parliament and an important political figure in Britain during the mid-1800’s, is quoted as saying.
“Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.”
Religious Based Education is the supply source for the reactionary ultra-conservative mindsets.
Under educate, keep them ignorant, and in the long run convince them vote to destroy and down grade their own middle class standard of life.
Thanks, Engineer, for your usual perceptive understanding of public affairs!
Got back home Thursday evening for Christmas. Watching the Army / Navy game. GO NAVY!
dave martin writes, “There is no room for negotiations with [those] who want to further indebt our country….”
Like the obscenely, overly funded United States military.
Not a bad point, dave martin.
Engineer, I see Navy won! 🙂
D, what you said to Dave is very appropriate! 🙂
Good news! New Pew poll shows Americans favor Democrats.

The Teapublicans are threatening to hold the debt ceiling hostage yet again — http://www.politicususa.com/2013/12/15/paul-ryan-threatens-president-obama-america-debt-limit.html — All the more reason for Democrats to take back the House in 2014!
Never a dull moment, right, Jane Doe?
LOL! Megyn Kelly is claiming that Santa Claus is white and Jesus was white.

Megyn Kelly is a very annoying, pompous woman, and to make Santa and Jesus white is preposterous, as the only certain thing about Jesus is that he was Jewish!
The white Santa topic reminds me of a Little House on the Prairie Christmas episode. In this particular episode, the grown-ups were talking about memorable Christmases. Esther Sue told about a Christmas when she and her parents were slaves. She saw a Santa Claus in a store and was conflicted because he had a white beard and a white face. To keep her faith alive, her dad dressed up as Santa Claus and brought her a present.
Thanks for the wonderful reminder of open mindedness! But not on Fox News Channel!
