Two Historic Anniversaries And The Presidential Inauguration

150 years ago on January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

50 years ago, on August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr delivered the “I Have A Dream” speech.

50 years later, on January 20 privately, and January 21 publicly, Barack Obama is taking the oath of office for his second term as President, the product of what Lincoln and King did!

This is, indeed, a very historic time in so many ways!

    Hello Professor,
After reading this post I had a memory flash back of the way things were in the 50’s and early 60’s. Of course I then reflected how far we have come as a country of accepting our Fore Father’s visions of “All Men Are Created Equal.”

I remember well the Koch Father who started the John Birch Society and the “Minute Men” of the time which was nothing more than a continuation of the Klan Membership Society. Because of my living through that time, I recognize the Koch’s Brother’s Tea Party and the “Patriots” of today are nothing more than a rehashing of their Father’s own racists platforms. It is those Tea Party Members of today that do not know the history “From Whence They Came” are misguided once again from their own ignorance.

I have to agree with you whole heartily that Martin Luther King was a man of action, motivation, and a voice of sanity. These traits were only surpassed by his self restraint to not act back to the violence that was perpetrated onto him and those whom stood by him to make right what had for so long been wrong and accepted as the status quo at the time.

I take great pride and hope for all with our President being sworn in once again for the highest office of the land. Those whom embrace the “Straw Man” arguments, and the nihilistic and laughable viewpoints to try degrade his validity, are only exposing themselves for their backwards thinking and lack of history knowledge.

“Good Job and Keep Up the Good Work” my friend. Your voice and voices like yours are very important!!
